Week 3 COM/501 Yusef Cody
Due to my challenges and experiences, I have taken on various roles in my life that have helped me understand people better and understand myself more as well. I am very empathetic and caring but also devoted and balanced. It is very important for individuals, especially who work in a professional setting like counseling, to be organized, unbiased, and caring. Based on my previous experiences, my challenges have helped me further my academic goals and desired outcome. My most important aspect of my life is my family. My mother and sister are my main motivations as to why I chose this path for my career. Growing into adulthood, the challenges I faced socially were recovered with the help of opening myself to new friendships and allowing people to get close to me emotionally. I realized that I did not have to carry the burden all by myself. My social life was null before realizing that I was keep friends at a distance to protect myself from being hurt. I was emotionally immature dealing with anxiety and frustration. It took a couple of years to fully develop into a person that I wanted to be. I want to be open and have a healthy group of friends. I never noticed I was missing any social interactions until I got help for my anxiety. Now that I am in a good place that I feel steady in my life, I finally started to care about my own health and happiness, rather than solely focusing on other people’s happiness. I find that I can connect to people as a counselor because I have been where they are in their journey and I can offer treatment and support. The fact that I deal with anxiety and yet still find hope and happiness in everyday life proves that I want to help other people the same way I was given help.
