I really appreciated your post about your experience with your cultural identity. I personally found your take on microaggressions to be very impactful and provides a great perspective on how therapists can be mindful in their interactions. When building trust with a client, a therapist must establish an unbiases view of their client. To provide the best treatment for the patient, it is crucial that therapists cultivate awareness of behaviors or traits that can be mistaken as microaggressions. Based on the client’s personal culture, background, experience, and mindset, specific behaviors or expressions may be considered rude or judgmental. It is the therapist’s position to practice mindfulness and inclusivity within their work environment and experience. Mindfulness of culture and every facet that encapsulates a client’s identity is imperative. After reading your post, I found that we share similar experiences regarding dominant culture. When I was young, I was raised in a duo cultured house given my parent’s backgrounds, but it was evident that one culture was more dominant and present in our habits and traditions. I found that my mother’s cultural influences were more present in the daily activities and traditions, while my father’s culture was mostly introduced with distant relatives and family gatherings. I have taken my own experiences with my cultural background and integrated various traditions to include traditions passed down from family generations.
