Three Learning Targets: 1. Define Culturally Responsive Classroom 2. Explain the importance of a Culturally Responsive Classroom 3. Describe a Culturally Responsive Classroom What is a Culturally Responsive Classroom? A Culturally Responsive Classroom is connecting student’s experiences, culture, and language to assure a safe and inclusive environment. As humans, we genuinely desire to connect with others, and finding those connections in the classroom encourages students to excel. Culturally and linguistically diverse students score below non-Hispanic white students in Math & Reading (Reardon, Robinson-Cimpian, & Weathers, 2015). In school, teachers spend so much time emphasizing the accomplishments of White America they then eliminate the sense of belonging for other non-White students by implicitly stating POC’s had no part in the advancement of this country. The curriculum itself can be detrimental to a CRT classroom as well, how do you expect teacher’s classroom to embody a CRT environment when they’re given materials that encourage them to teach from a neutral perspective. There is both good & bad engrained in America’s DNA, and it’s important that students are astute to it all to maneuver within society. Why are Culturally Responsive Classrooms needed? Teachers who implement CRT act as examples for students and others around them to encourage an equitable educational experience for all students (Banks, 2010; Cochran-Smith, 2004; Delpit, 2006; Gay, 2010; Kraft, 2007; Ladson-Bill-ings, 2009; Moll, Amanti, Neff, & Gonzalez, 2005). To do so, teachers must alleviate biases that prevent them from fulfilling their duties to create, cultivate relationships, and educate students through an unfiltered/unbiased viewpoint. Some educators feel they’re inadequate to lead a culturally responsive class due to their ignorance of
different cultural backgrounds (Fitchett et al., 2012; McKoy, MacLeod, Walter, & Nolker, 2017). Teachers must invest in researching, understanding, initiate conversations with non-Hispanic White students to enhance their confidence to implement a CRT classroom. What does a Culturally Responsive Classroom entail? A CRT classroom includes five things: family oriented, communication with students, elevating students’ culture, and establishing expectations for behavior. As educators, we must be aware of institutional inequities that exist- in doing so, we acknowledge that there’s a problem that needs to be address versus suppressing those feelings resulting in passive aggression (Conage, 2016). Each student has a unique circumstance, so it’s imperative that we take the time to build a relationship with them to know how to better serve them. There will be students who will enter your classroom who are unfamiliar with the English language, so we must “elevate the status” of the language (Beeman, 2019)- assuring bilingual students that their native language is just as important as the English language. In the process families will feel a better sense of community and will be more susceptible to making contributions to the school. Conclusion I believe to have an CRT classroom teachers must ensure a safe atmosphere, exhibit an unbiased behavior, and a welcoming environment for all cultures- this includes doing research while taking the time to cultivate a rapport with the students in the classroom. To do so, teachers must be trained, well equipped with necessary resources, and they must relinquish their personal biases- allowing students the autonomy to figure out their effective learning style (Irvine& Armento, 2001). According to Irvine (1990) misunderstanding of culture can lead to the failure of cultural capital to maneuver within a school system. Based on the research provided, rest assured it is of the upmost importance that children/teachers are provided with the resources/skills necessary to implement a CRT classroom (facilitated/guided by the teachers).
