Personal and Social Development Scenarios
*Review the original assignment directions and rubric prior to submission. * 50-100 words per entire scenario response. * A minimum of one scholarly resource per rationale for support is required for full credit.
Scenario 1
In an upcoming lesson in third grade, you will be addressing state standards related to listening
and speaking (e.g., gaining the floor in respectful ways, listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the topics and texts under discussion). How would you encourage parents/guardians to support this standard outside of the classroom?
Instructional Strategies for the Classroom
In my future classroom I find it important to teach my students what is expected of them and how they are expected to listen, and speaking one at a time. A fun classroom lesson regarding speaking in turn and listening is playing games where active listening is important. For example, playing a small game of telephone or using a ball during share time or popcorn questions. Instruct to the students the importance of listening and being respectful while others are speaking. Collaboration Strategies
A good collaboration strategy is to have the students play telephone at home with their parent/families. This demonstrates the lesson learned in class while keeping the parents involved with their child’s learning. Elementary age students are beginning to step foot into a stage when psychological, emotional, cognitive and social characteristics are changing.
It’s crucial to their academic achievement for parents to be involved during
this period. Children are more likely to excel academically with their parent’s involvement in their education. (Cole, 2016)
Method of Communication
A method is communication that is utilized in my current district is ParentVue. ParentVue is platform used for parents to stay connected with the school for all their children. They are able to stay up to date on school events, tests, assignments and their academic performance in school. It also
offers them contact information for each teacher and a messaging platform to stay in close communication with parents. The platform has a mobile app to alert parents of important test, exams or homework. For students without technology, a letter/flyer home to explain the assignment and its important to our classroom standards. I’d ask parents to sign the flyer to help teach my students responsibility.
Rationale for the Method of Communication
(Research support is required.)
ParentVue is a direct line to the student’s classroom. It provides both the parent and student with mobile access to grades, assignments, and communication with teachers. (Classroom, n.d) The platform increases parent involvement and student accountability. (Classroom, n.d) parents are able to view the assignment in real time and keep their child responsible for their own assignments and work. Scenario 2
James, an African American student, is very successful in your class and has been on the honor roll for the past three quarters. His family is concerned with his abilities to socialize with peers of various cultural backgrounds. How can you support the families in your classroom in embracing cultural identity’s role in a student’s personal and social development?
Instructional Strategies for the Classroom
There are a handful of fun ways to incorporate cultural identity and socialization into the classroom. A multicultural greeting is a fun way to teach students foreign languages, about various cultures and socialization. Another fun way to encourage socialization with cultural exposure is diverse art. Each month introduce the students a new multicultural greet and match it with a diverse art project. For example, October can be Mexican heritage month. The greeting as follows; “Buenos dias” and diverse art project can be paper flowers to represent Mexican heritage. (Exploring, 2020) Collaboration Strategies
Students will learn about another cultural heritage each month and will take their diverse art home to teach their parents what they learned. Students will become the teacher and their parents will become the student.
Students will then get the opportunity to teach their parent about the heritage for that month. Method of Communication
ParentVue is still a perfect form of communication for students with access
to technology. It will be explained in assignments for students to become the teacher and teach their parents about the new cultural heritage. For those students without technology, a letter home explaining the importance
of the assignment with room for comment/signature to hold students accountable. Remind- remind is another form of communication that would send a text reminder to parents to engage with students and allow them to become the teacher. Rationale for the Method of Communication
(Research support is required.)
Remind is a powerful messenger app that connects teachers to anyone that is able to receive text messages. It has the ability to translate into other languages and keep everyone connected. It also states that 80% of schools use the platform to stay connected with their families. (Communication, n.d)
Scenario 3
Recently, a concerned parent brings to your attention that a poll was taken on social media, and students in your class nominated Jenna as the “biggest loser.” How can you best communicate your school’s policy on cyberbullying, your plan to address the concern at school, and how parents can address it in the home?
Instructional Strategies for the Classroom
Considering that the cyberbullying has already occurred it is important to re-center the classroom and cover cyberbullying and bullying policies for both the school and my classroom. I would address the students involved directly and take appropriate action depending on whether the poll created was during school hours, after school or done at home. A conversation with the teacher and principal is crucial. Collaboration Strategies
Collaboration with parents is a must in any bullying or cyberbullying occurrence. As a teacher I would address bullying/cyberbullying with my class and have students complete an activity explaining cyberbullying, why
it’s unacceptable and what they should do if they see it. I would hold a phone or in person conference with al the parents involved and suggest they monitor their child’s cyber activity. As a teacher, I would have both the parents and the students sign my anti bullying policy and make them aware of consequences of bullying. Method of Communication
A parent-teacher conference is critical in any case of bullying. A phone call
home to parents and a newsletter about how to prevent cyberbullying. Another option could be holding an assembly for the whole school to address bullying and the school’s policy on bullying. Rationale for the Method of Communication
(Research support is required.)
An anti-bullying assembly has the potential to teach students on how to apply kindness and “be an UpStander” against bullying. (Anti, n.d) Parent teacher conferences are key to creating and maintaining a strong relationship between parents and teachers. Scenario 4
For the past few weeks, you have noticed that several cliques have developed in your classroom and there are many students being left out of social activities in and out of the classroom. There are beginning to be tensions rising between two of the cliques. How can you encourage inclusion, and explain to parents how they can support you from home?
Instructional Strategies for the Classroom
As a future teacher, I plan to alter the situation in my classroom by assigning different groups to activities, projects or task to aid my students in building cross-group friendships. (Ormrod & Jones, 2023) This will separate the cliques that have formed and encourage other possible healthier relationships form between students. Our book highlighted the importance of controlling or randomizing small groups for projects, assignments or task. Teachers also have control over the seating

arrangement and can seat students accordingly.
Collaboration Strategies
A collaboration strategy parents could implement would be exposing their children to more social and culturally diverse settings. These social connections can occur at any function or activity outside of normal school hours; for example, pools, parks, sporting games, museums, events or parties. Possibly sharing more about other cultures or trying new types of cuisine could expose children to other cultures and a healthier understanding. Method of Communication
A parent teacher conference is a must for all forms of bullying. Excluding other students from something is a form of bullying; therefore, a parent teacher conference via phone/in-person is key. Reminder bulletin or newsletter via remind/parentVUE will bring light to the issues disrupting our class dynamic as well. Rationale for the Method of Communication
(Research support is required.)
A parent teacher conference is a good opportunity to establish, share and uphold a strong bond between parents and the school. It also creates an opportunity for teachers/school sites to learn more about the student and maybe anything they are faced with or struggling at home. This offers the site more opportunities to help the student and steer them toward the right path. (Nemours, n.d)
Scenario 5
T At the beginning of the school year, you notice that several of your sixth graders are wearing
the same brand of Nike shoes. A few days later, you overhear a few of these students mocking another student for not having these same shoes. The next week, the student being teased comes to school in the Nike shoes. How can you address peer pressure within your classroom and encourage parents to support the concept from home?
Instructional Strategies for the Classroom
Its important for the teacher to address the bullies and remind them of the expectations and set up a parent teacher conference for both the bullies and
the victim’s parents. The class needs to be readdressed for bullying/peer pressure and an open discussion needs to take place. This discussion will occur in a non-judgmental environment and aid students in identifying the negative effects of peer pressure/bullying. Collaboration Strategies
Collaborations with parents when it comes to bullying or peer pressure is critical. Regular parent-teacher conferences to ensure their involvement and their understanding of the classroom dynamic. Method of Communication
In this scenario a parent-teacher conference is necessary to provide the opportunity to speak face-to-face without interruption about the student. A Newsletter with general information regarding bullying, peer pressure and school expectations as a reminder.
Rationale for the Method of Communication
(Research support is required.)
The importance of keeping parents involved in their child’s education and safety is key. The significance of an effective relationship with parents is key in address bullying issues and peer pressure. “Parent involvement in their child’s education is a key factor in a child’s academic success.
