The educator provided the child with the opportunity to spoon their own serving of food into their bowl using a serving spoon, and provided minimal assistance by using a teaspoon to ensure some of it stayed on the serving spoon, which allows the child to grasp the concept gradually. The educator engaged and supported the child in learning by allowing them the opportunity to serve their own meal, while remaining close by and providing minimal assistance, so the child knows assistance is nearby If required, providing them with a sense of security and autonomy. The educator provided positive verbal praise, as well and clapping and smiling, acknowledging the child's success and effort which would have built the child's confidence and encouraged them to continue. To support a shy child to participate in serving themselves and be part of the mealtime experience, | would demonstrate how to use utensils to serve food, encourage them to observe others during mealtime and gradually join in when they feel comfortable. | would offer choices such as different serving utensils or plates, be patient and allow them to participate at their own pace, celebrate achievements and accomplishments with praise and positive reinforcement to boost their confidence
