II. D. Describe how and why you can tailor your message to your audience, providing specific examples. For example, will your audience understand social scientific terminology and principles, or will you need to explain these? How will you communicate effectively with your audience?
In order to effectively reach my audience for my chosen topic, it will be necessary to make a connection between my research and something personal in someone else’ life. My research subject is the effect of war on families. I know that a few of my classmates are veterans or are currently serving. When just considering serving in the military and not deploying, there is still a sacrifice that must be made by the family members of soldiers. Soldiers are often separated for their family for training operations. I know before my deployment, I was often gone early in the morning for PT and home late because of my security detail that I had to perform, etc. When I deployed, it was an even greater sacrifice, because I could not call home often enough and my wife would worry. There were also a lot of soldiers overseas and wives at home that would betray their marriage in search of someone or something else to fill their emptiness. Not only did married couples suffer, but children as well. Not having their Mom or Dad home to help their partner or the caregiver discipline, it was very difficult for ever member of the family to adjust when the soldier arrived home. I. Provide a brief overview of the social scientific background of your issue and research question. How
is the issue situated within the social sciences?
When we consider the history of war, we tend to view it through a lens of history and military science, focusing on the key events and persons involved in those events. Oppositely, The SAGE Encyclopedia of War: Social Science Perspective view war through a social science lens, look at the cause and effects
of war on economics, political science, mass media, communication, psychology and sociology. The most disastrous effect of war, I believe as per my research, is the effect that the military and wartime has on the families of those soldiers, as well as the psychological problems that coincide with their experience.
VII. Communicate your message in a way that is tailored to your specific audience. For instance, you could consider your vocabulary, your audience's potential current natural science knowledge or lack thereof, and what is specifically important to the audience.
To reach my audience, I believe that it would be best for me to use an analogy, an anecdote and visuals.
There is so much pain involved in the recovery of families because of the effects of war and I believe by sharing stories from soldiers and family members of soldiers that the audience will be able to relate and have compassion for those people, even if they themselves have never been in that situation. I don’t want to necessarily “dumb down” any of the vocabulary that I choose to use, but I will make sure
that the terms and definitions that I use can be easily understood by most, if not all, of my listeners.
