WK 2 DISCUSSION SOCW 6101- ESSENTIAL SKILLS Explain when it would be appropriate to use self-disclosure. Using the "self-disclosure technique” is appropriate if it benefits the client in various ways. For instance, it can benefit their treatment by providing a real- life example of how someone else has dealt with similar issues. Using self- disclosure to divulge a client's thoughts, information, feelings, values, or experiences would be appropriate. (Kirst-Ashman, K. K., & Hull, G. H., Jr. 2018, p.80). Additionally, it can help build trust in the therapeutic relationship by demonstrating that the therapist is willing to be open and honest with them. Moreover, self-disclosure can help alleviate any shame or embarrassment that a client may feel about specific symptoms. However, it is essential to note that self-disclosure should be used judiciously and only when it is likely beneficial to the client. Provide a specific example of the type of self-disclosure you might use in this scenario. The type of self-disclosure that I would use in this scenario would relate to my interactions with individuals struggling with mental health and co- occurring disorders. The example that I would use would be effective communication. Effective nonverbal communication is crucial to creating a safe space and building a solid connection with someone. When communicating nonverbally, it's essential to remember that our body language can express a range of emotions and attitudes, from confidence and openness to defensiveness and hostility. The tone of voice is another important aspect of nonverbal communication. Speaking, including pitch, volume, and intonation, can convey emotions and attitudes. Our attitude and demeanor can influence how others perceive us and the conversation. Demonstrating respect, empathy, and an open-minded attitude can help build trust and foster deeper connections. On the other hand, being defensive, judgmental, or dismissive can create a hostile atmosphere and hinder communication. By being aware of our body language, tone of voice, and attitude, we can
demonstrate support, respect, and empathy and create a safe and positive space for communication. Identify an interviewing technique you learned from this week's resources that you would use when working with this client. Explain why you would use this technique. During interviews/assessments, specific techniques work particularly well for me. Being empathetic, or putting myself in the individual's shoes and trying to understand their perspective, is crucial. Additionally, listening to and not judging what they are saying is essential. It is also helpful to paraphrase what they said to ensure I have understood correctly. Lastly, asking open- ended questions, such as "How are you feeling today?" or "Is there anything that I could assist you with to alleviate your stress/symptoms?" allows the individual to elaborate and express themselves freely. These techniques have helped me to conduct successful interviews and build rapport with my clients. References Kirst-Ashman, K. K., & Hull, G. H., Jr. (2018).
