Explain the ways in which cultural messages influence family help-seeking patterns. Cultural messages influence family help seeking patterns because the way on how individuals grow up influence all the decisions in life, our beliefs and perceptions on what were thought to us by our parents or primary caregivers, it is the way we were brought up by our family, we usually adopt on what our family is accustomed to. For example, in our culture, I remembered a parent of one of our relatives wants to seek help for her child because of the behavior they are noticing, he is misbehaving but my grandfather who is an authority figure, is against it and they listened and did not seek any help. He turned to be very rebellious, I just thought that if they had seek help for him he might not be turned to the way he is now. Or even some cultures may just value their self-reliance and every person has their own identity and culture that makes them who they are. The manifestation of racial, cultural, ethnic and other identity variables is the prerogative of the member rather than the leader, the leader should provide opportunities for the members to discuss their identities (Toseland & Rivas, 2017). Based on the Garcia-Lowe case study describe how a family's ethnic identification might impact its multi system transactions. The family consist of a Caucasian mother, Carol and Joseph, the father is a Hispanic male, the two belonged to different backgrounds, and they have a 19 month old who is under the care of the maternal grandmother because of the arrest of Joseph because he has been charged with drugs and weapon's possession and this was held endangerment. In Hispanic culture, they are family oriented that is why Joseph wants his family be back together and wants to be better for the child. Caucasian culture has similar values, the husband is the head of the household and the provider of the family, the wife takes care of the family, doing household chores. Joseph disbelief in the healthcare system might affect on why Carol had issues cooperating with the treatment for her alcohol use, is some Hispanic culture man or the husband is the dominant figure, he has the patriarchal authority, women are expected to to defer tot he authority of their husband. Finally explain why understanding dimensions of ethnic identity is important for a social worker engaging with families.
Assessing cultural differences is important in assessing the group behavior, especially in families. The social worker's awareness of their own cultural identity is fundamental tot he practice as their informed assumptions about the family's cultural backgrounds and experience. The awareness of the beliefs, values, stereotypes and biases informs the social worker's practice. and will influence the relationship with the client or family. Social worker must have cultural competence and sensitivity and be aware and have the knowledge on client's ethnicity, background, race and cultural background. It also promotes effective communication, break barriers and will have deeper connection to the clients. Reference: Toseland, R.W., & Rivas, R.F.
