Complex Challenge
– Proposal for how the Concept of Happiness impacts Biological Factors and Health
The complex challenge revealed that the concept of happiness does in fact impact biological factors and health across multiple cultures. In the process of research, it was intriguing to learn that not all governments are focusing on improving happiness in their country. There seems to be a continuous decline in happiness, according to “The World Happiness Report”. What is even more surprising the United States government has not shown any interest in addressing this major issue. The World Happiness Report goes further to mention negative feelings are continuing to rise (Newman, 2019) This is concerning because we are America, we are the country everyone wants to come to and be “free” and happiness should be on the docket to help find ways to accommodate it. Compared to Japan and the U.S, Happiness is not quite the seen the same. National Library of Medicine
mentions in their article, “Interpersonal well-being, as hypothesized, was rated significantly higher, relative to the overall well-
being, among Japanese compared to U.S. respondents, but only among younger adults. Women in both cultures showed higher interpersonal well-being, but also greater negative affect compared with men.” (NLM, 2011). My goal is to help educate the community, help build a council, and focus on returning America to being happy. With this council, we want to reinvent the ways of making our city better and healthier. The objective of this is to motivate the city and county to realize the positive impacts of happiness. If such a council is created, we will delegate resources to research the area and bring forth the results to be able to examine them and focus on them. In the articles from Pogosyan, Global Wellness Summit, and Sustainable Development Solutions Network, it states, that the key to happiness and well-being in communities is to have an effective social network. Pogosyan expresses research has shown how strong social support can increase well-being. (Pogosyan, 2016) The Global Wellness Summit along with the 2018 Happiness report views relationships with their peers and kin as one of the five elements of happiness. (Global Wellness Summit) Countries like Denmark, Finland, and Sweden are classified amongst the highest in social support according to the Sustainable Development Solutions Network and the Happiness Report of 2020. In the view of the community, coming together to embark on changing our way of life, we need to take action and redirect our efforts to impact our happiness not only in our culture but also in others. “Happiness is an artifact of our modern history and not a feature of
human condition”, Stearns states. (Stearns, 2012). In the article “The History of Happiness”,
Sterns mentioned the historical studies of the concept of happiness are reasonably new. Particularly in Western cultures, but it was not until the 19
th
century that standards of life began to exhibit happiness from a sad

cultural perspective. Sterns goes on about how the 17
th
and 18th centuries encouraged people to follow the idea of a God. (Sterns, 2012) In the 18
th
century the values of the Enlightenment, Alexander Pope introduced the idea of happiness as the ultimate goal. Annotated Bibliography

Newman, K. (2019). World Happiness Report
o
The article is a summary of the 2019 World Happiness Report. Newman starts by explaining the data from the 2019 report on how it has seen a decline in happiness from the previous years. Newman expresses the results from the United States showing a decline from 2000. It is safe to state, that most of this article is arguments on the government not doing their part in supporting the United States on happiness and which
could cause the citizens to not vote. Newman's relevancy in this article supports this topic by informing specifics on the World Happiness Report that can help us better the community.
Pogosyan, M. (2016) How Does Culture Affect Our Happiness?
o
Mariana Pogosyan does a great job of describing how one’s happiness can be influenced by a social community. Pogosyan goes into debt on the dissimilarities between cultures, i.e., America and Japan. Pogosyan speaks about the influence it creates from country to country. Pogosyan gives valid recommendations of methods to help you with your happiness and well-being. Pogosyan explains the viewpoints of independent and interdependent. Not to mention the several ways to happiness. Articles for this company
are written by people who are knowledgeable of the fields and verified for accuracy and sometimes are revised for transparency.
Stearns, P. (2012). The History of Happiness. o
Stearns proceeds seriously on how happiness has transformed over the years. He compares it from the beginning of the 18th century to the 20th century. There is a part where he mentions, “Many people felt obliged to apologize for the moments of happiness' (Stearns, P., 2012) that expression made me reflect on how much we don’t take advantage of being happier. Stearns uses data from East Asian culture on how they

view happiness to the Western culture, and it turns out, it is comparable. This article is valid for this topic and purposes vital information.
Sustainable Development Solutions Network (2020). World Happiness Report.
o
The World Happiness Report was created to help “measure and use subjective well-
being to track and explain the quality of lives around the world” (Sustainable Development Solutions Network 2020). Since it was released in 2012 the survey has reached about 1000 residents in about 150 countries. The focus topics are income, generosity, freedom, reliable government, social support, and healthy life expectancy. This report supports the validation of this report. Course of Action
– The time to start involving our community and figuring out a way to help our families and friends
avoid these impacts, is now. With support from other government actions, according to The World Happiness Reports, committees will concentrate on addressing the issues and cascading the latest information to the community, and doing so will help the well-being and increase productivity. The World Happiness Report states the government will start to recognize the happiness of people and how it will help impact the people. (Sustainable Development Solutions Network, 2020). The committee will want to be vigilant to not make people feel uneasy and feel we are not considering their happiness. According to the World Happiness Report, it indicates that the happiest people are, the more productive they can be. (Sustainable Development Solutions Network, 2020).
In the creation of the happiness committee, we will need to use a large enough space like an auditorium or event center to host the committee. We will need to prepare to present to a multicultural audience along with the citizens of the county. The presentation will have several key points about the history and studies about happiness. In the article, “The History of Happiness” Stearns mentions the studies identified the cultural standards in the 17
th
and 18th centuries followed the guidelines of God and were forbidden to have any type of joy or pleasure. (Stearns, 2012) This information is vital to share with the committee and educate them on how the world has evolved. The foundation of the presentation is to inform the audience about the many ways to be aware of their health. The second part
of this presentation will be about sharing the many ways how to approach different cultures’ happiness. Using Firestone’s list of four elements helps the audience better understand the importance of happiness. Lastly, the last part of the presentation will be about how different cultures and governments around the world are doing to help increase happiness and well-being. The community needs to be

willing to take the time to understand what the impact of the well-being has on their health and well-
being. The presentation will include information on understanding how to increase well-being, there will be a section on Firestone’s list of 4 elements of well-being. Proposed Solution – Coincidence with the committee, it is vital that these meetings stay consistent with hosting weekly meetings to provide any type of updates, guidance, and support on the happiness and well-being
of the people. It is imperative while hosting these meetings, culture is being considered. Diversity is large
and we would not want to offend anyone. Sharing Firestone’s Four Elements of Well-being can help the committee obtain realistic goals and set the people up for success. Once there are enough people to start conducting the weekly meetings, it is time to start selecting the people to be on the board. After the selection then comes a recurring schedule to host meetings with an agenda. It will be wise to start looking for some shareholders or sponsors for projected events. By setting this committee up, the local people will see the effort made in trying to help maintain the well-being of everyone's health. Audience Analysis - We will use the local library to host the presentation, the library is known for its corporation to allow the community to use their space to help the community. This presentation is available for anyone who is interested in supporting the cause. We expect approximately 45-65 people of diverse cultures in age, race, and gender to attend the gathering. In the meeting, the presentation will be introduced in view so a multicultural audience can understand what the community is trying to do. It is best to present
so each culture can leave with the understanding and the goals that we are trying to share so we all can grasp happiness and wellness to better support the community. Communication strategy – primary group The primary audience will include civic and school leaders, to ensure proper communication. When presenting, we will use formal methods to conduct the presentation, so we are viewed as professionals. By including the civic and school leaders, we are representing our community therefore we are able to promote the beginning of happiness committees in our community. Communication strategy – Multicultural group When presenting to a multicultural audience, we are to use a more non-business formal tone to be able to connect with them. The purpose of this is to keep the audience interested in the topic and

continue to show support and learn about happiness and well-being. Our visual part of the presentation will impact the audience's attention. Doing this will allow people to converse and collaborate to make the world a better place. References
