Hello everyone,
As a black man, statistics show that I am twice as likely to face police brutality as my counterparts. It is for this reason that I tend to keep up to date on cases like this. However, I had
not heard of this case. So naturally after reading the recommended article, I decided to look into it a little more. I looked up the actual video. So, I must admit that generally speaking I am a F around and find out type of personality, but I have to say it was a little bit disturbing to see and hear a police officer acting like that. Granted police officers are human, but when you do a job like this you are held to a higher standard. Our textbooks talks about how perception of a police officer’s role affects how they do their job. When the officers and the public view them as
crime fighters then there is a certain willingness to accept justifications in how they may act (Pollock, 2021). On the other hand, when they are viewed as public servants then it is generally believed that officers owe everyone the duty of civility and legality (Pollock, 2021). To me the video showed an officer who was not only unprofessional, but downright unethical. There was no reason to run and tackle a suspect already on the ground. And the way he screamed at him, and the bystanders was absolutely unprofessional. It is my understanding that prior to this the officer had an outstanding reputation. However, after witnessing this, I would wonder whether he was truly as upstanding as believed to be or whether he just hadn’t been caught before. Either way I would not want an officer who has the propensity to behave like this
in my community. So it is my opinion that they were absolutely justified in their firing of Disraeli.
Though whether or not this decision to fire him will help community relations is up in the air. The problem is that the damage has been done. Community members do not trust that law enforcement acts within the law for the public’s best interest, public apologies, and even holding the participating officers accountable, may not easily repair that trust (Lantigua-
Williams, 2016). SO, while the department made steps to make this right within the community,
it may have no effect.
