4-2 Short Paper: Helping Darryl and Samar to "Fight Fairly”
COU-520 Diversity in Counseling Krysta McGinnis
Southern New Hampshire University
A wide range of cultural dynamics came to light throughout the sessions. It was clear from the beginning of the session that Darryl spoke more than Samar. As the sessions go on, it
becomes evident that Darryl and Samar share similar sentiments, despite Samar's lack of talkativeness. In this regard, I think that their disparate communication styles are influenced by their cultural origins. Darryl uses a more straightforward and direct communication style.
Samar, on the other hand, uses a less forceful, passive-aggressive strategy. Overall, I think Dr. Goody did a fantastic job. I completely agree with her strategy of assisting the couple in seeing how their contacts with friends and coworkers are eventually affecting their relationship. I appreciate the strategy Dr. Goody used to identify any fresh difficulties the couple could be having in sharing their marriage. The doctor's query about whether the couple had felt the same way about acquaintances and coworkers was an excellent
technique to get the pair to think about the causes of their relationship problems.
However, I would have approached the couple's therapy sessions in a few different ways if I had been the one providing the guidance. Darryl said at the start of the sessions that "Samar always makes him look like the bad one." Darryl was prompted to elaborate by Dr. Goody, but I didn't see where the doctor followed up to discuss it. Because of the cultural and communicational disparities between them, I believe it's crucial to recognize that these distinctions might not necessarily be intended negatively. I can see why the physician wouldn't want to come out as biased. But I also want to figure out a method to make sure Samar understands that his need to express his emotions shouldn't be suppressed by Darryl's direct style of communication.
The choice they made to seek counseling is one aspect of Darryl and Samar's story that
stands out as a reflection of human resilience. There are a lot of excuses individuals use for
not seeking counseling, so this couple's choice to do so shows how committed they are to one other and how determined they are. Despite the disagreement and controversy in society, I think their determination to marry and advance their relationship shows perseverance in the face of difficulty. Their determination to continue as a strong pair in spite of the loss of outside support is similar to their understanding of the negative personality changes and their pursuit of professional assistance to secure and enhance their relationship.
There are a few moral issues that apply to this situation. Counselors must convey informed consent to their clients at every therapy session. ACA Code of Ethics A.2, which goes over the client's and counselor's rights and obligations. ACA Ethical Guidelines B.1.a. Diversity and Multiculturalism The counselor must appreciate different points of view and be appropriately aware of the cultural connotations of confidentiality and privacy. Ethics Code of
the ACA E.8. This code addresses diversity, intercultural challenges, and evaluation methodologies. The code makes sure the counselor considers other pertinent elements in addition to test findings.
