WEEK 1 DP (Second Response) Research Topic: Correlation between Adolescent Mental Health and Vaping According to Livingston (2022), Vaping, identified as Electronic Cigarette use, is substantially increasing among adolescents. In fact, "In 2020, 19.6% of high school students and 4.7% among middle school students; 40% of high school users were frequent or daily users." (Livingston, 2022, p. 2). Vapes/E-cigarettes resemble a cigarette and have other common names such as "Vape Pens, Tank Systems, and Mods" (Livingston, 2022). Vapes contain nicotine, other addictive, harmful substances, and or marijuana. The evolution of vaping is ever evolving as there is now a new Vape called 'JUUL.' "This device delivers nicotine at a concentration of 5%, has the appearance of a USB drive, and can fit in the palm of the user's hand, making it attractive and easy to conceal" (Livingston, 2022). Unfortunately, Depression (the most common health concern), Suicidality, Anxiety, and other Psychiatric symptoms are associated with adolescent Vaping, attributing to long-term impacts on their health (Livingston, 2022). Philosophical orientation is the beliefs that shape one's worldview and guide research (Burkholder et al. 2020). Philosophical perspectives can be reviewed through constructivism, positivism, and post-positivism. Constructivism best reflects my worldview as it emphasizes the role of social interaction in shaping one's perception (Burkholder et al., 2020). When examining my research topic on the Correlation between Adolescent Mental Health and Vaping, the epistemological assumption includes exploring the knowledge/meanings associated with mental health and vaping and the interplay between them. Knowledge is subjective; it depends on the context and is shaped by the individual's interactions within their environment (Burkholder et al., 2020). According to Burkholder et al. (2020), the ontological assumption of constructivism can be defined as looking at the nature of reality and understanding/questioning how things exist and relate to each other. Therefore, when examining the context of mental health and vaping, it is recognized that both can be defined within a particular social or cultural setting, proving that they are not indeed objective. Instead, it highlights the differences in perceptions and experiences among individuals. Qualitative Research is a methodological approach that explores human behaviors and experiences that solely depend on non-numeric data such as observations and explanations (Babbie, 2017a). As a result, interviews would be deemed best to collect data as it will allow me to identify, analyze, and capture the narratives of adolescents while exploring their reasons for vaping and their perceptions of mental health while examining and understanding the connection between them.
Grounded Theory is another research approach that can be applied to understanding the correlation. Babie (2017b) states that "Grounded Theory research topics should aim to discover emergent ideas or connections and increase understanding of meaning, context, process, how things happen, and the ways in which X affects Y, with an end goal of generating explanatory theory" (p. 233). Therefore, through data collection (audio recordings, interviews, and open-ended questionnaires), researchers can best identify adolescent vaping and mental health patterns (Babie, 2017b). As a result, these assumptions and approaches provide an in-depth understanding of adolescents and the relationship between mental health and vaping within their 'teenage world.'
