Stereotypes and Collaboration Assignment
Last name: Vega
1.
Write 1-2 paragraphs below describing a situation in which you had difficulty communicating with a person from a cultural background different from yours. ●
Identify barriers to communication that may have resulted from cultural differences.
-
I became friends with a student from Vietnam that recently moved to the states. They didn't know
much English, and I didn't speak any vietnamese. It was hard to communicate in the beginning, but the more we tried to talk the more we could understand and communicate with each other. We found out that we both liked trying foods from different cultures. Since this was in middle school we had no way of going to different places; so when we brought food we would share the food, or we brought extra. I picked up a little on understanding what they were saying through the
physical motions of the body and they picked up English quickly.
2.
Write 1-2 paragraphs below describing a situation in which you had difficulty working with another
individual or within a group. ●
If the situation turned out well, describe the communication and collaborative skills you used to achieve success. ●
If it did not turn out well, describe what you should have done differently. -
I was working on a project in highschool, and I worked with a partner. I had difficulty working with my partner because they didn't want to work on the project, and they would have rather slept. We had a conversation about why they didn't want to work on the project. We came up with a compromise where I would work on the majority of the project and they could do the remaining of the project, and I also told them with the compromise that they will also try hard and do a good job on their part of the project. I was willing to compromise because I wanted both of us to get a good grade, and I didnt want to work on the whole project on my own.

Maria is a veterinary technician at a small rural clinic. She is assessing a middle-aged cat patient who appears to be relatively healthy. The client informs Maria that he would like the patient to be euthanized because he’s going on vacation and has no idea what to do with his cat while he’s away.
●
What assumptions might Maria make about the situation and the client? ●
How should Maria react when she hears the client’s reason for being at the clinic today? Consider both verbal and nonverbal responses in your answer.
●
What should Maria do next after hearing the client’s request for euthanasia?
-
I feel Maria would be in shock of the situation, but her reaction should remain calm and nonjudgemental. Maria should watch her facial expressions, even though it can be difficult. If I was Maria I would hear the client out, and let them know the doctor has to do a wellness exam and I would mention other suggestions like daycare, giving up the cat, boarding. From there the doctor would take the proper steps into communicating why euthanasia should not be an option. I feel the most important part in any situation with communication is hearing anyone out and providing options back.

Dylan is a veterinary technician at a busy urban clinic. He is about to call in the next patient and sees that the patient is a pit bull and the client is a heavily tattooed male who has an unkempt appearance.
●
What assumptions might Dylan make about the client based on his appearance and the breed of his dog?
●
What assumptions might Dylan make about the patient based on his breed and the appearance of the client?
●
How should Dylan react when approaching the client and patient? Consider both verbal and nonverbal responses in your answer.
-
I don’t know what type of assumptions Dylan would make from the client and patient. The
client being heavily tattooed has nothing to do with the reason the patient is in the clinic. Some people are going to assume the pit bull or the client are going to become aggressive. It can be difficult at times to not judge people on their caretaking of their pets but at the end of the day, our job is to do what is best for the patient. Dylan should approach this client and patient just like any other client or patient and just commence the
appointment properly and professionally.
