When preparing for the school year, it is extremely important that you begin brainstorming how you would like your classroom to function on a day-to-day basis. This includes making management and instructional preparations. Burden (2020) states that “studies on classroom management have verified that the first few days of the school year set the tone for the entire year” (p. 42). There are multiple classroom preparation ideas that you, as a teacher, can
develop prior to the start of a new school year. Classroom preparation ideas that I believe will help set the tone for the school year include management and instructional preparation ideas. Management preparation ideas that you could develop prior to the start of a new school year include the school environment, support materials, classroom rules, expectations and procedures,
classroom helpers, school/home communication, birthday/holiday celebrations, room arrangement, and seat selection/arrangements. The above preparation ideas will help promote a positive classroom environment. A positive classroom environment is imperative for students; a positive classroom environment not only creates a safe and supportive environment for students but also encourages students to become motivated and take ownership of their learning. Incorporating the above management preparation ideas in the classroom helps foster a sense of community, which will promote student engagement. Some instructional preparation ideas that can be developed prior to the start of a new school year include long-range plans, skeleton plans, daily lesson plans, opening classroom routines, and homework. The instructional ideas will promote a positive classroom environment because it will ensure that the teaching is more effective. This will ultimately ensure students have access to not only an education but a quality education that they all deserve. In all, by utilizing the above management and instructional preparation ideas, you will most definitely promote a positive classroom environment for your students.
