Intensive Language-Action Therapy (ILAT)
Focus: The idea behind ILAT is that verbal communication and language use goes hand-and-hand with physical movement (action). ILAT aims to implement three main guidelines for the
neurorehabilitation of language derived from neuroscience and linguistic sciences: high frequency, language-action embedding, and focusing on the individuals’ communicative abilities
and needs. The links occur at the brain programming level. This allows for pragmatic communication to be practiced simultaneously. The more the technique is practiced the more improvement that will be made. Another theoretical principle addresses communication and behavior in a therapeutic setting. The aim of this is to improve communication in everyday life conversations. Protocol:
1.
The action structure of the language game.
2.
The materials (typically specific sets of picture cards) used in the game and the
framing of the game (e.g., barriers between players, double card sets, impossibility
of seeing each other’s cards).
3.
Behavioral techniques such as modelling, shaping, and positive reinforcement.
4.
Explicit rule descriptions. (example)
a.
2 move – specific – Player A REQUESTs object from player B – Player B follows the request or rejects
b.
2 move – general – Player A REQUESTs object from any co-player – Player B (who has the matching card) follows the request while others reject
c.
4move – specific – Player A asks B whether s/he has a given object – Player B agrees or denies – Player A REQUESTs the object from B – B follows the request
Evaluations:
Research shows a slight improvement when given the BDAE. The test groups have been small, but have produced positive results. Personal feedback and self-evaluation have both produced positive feedback from PWA who have gone through this therapeutic process. ILAT is a great therapy tool because it can be tailored to anyone with Aphasia and can be formatted to higher language capacity and lower level language capacity. Citations:
