When it comes to student behavior, several techniques or reinforcements are available for teachers to use within the classroom. According to Burden, “a reinforcer is an event or consequence that increases the strength or future probability of the behavior it follows” (Burden, 2020, p. 95). Often, teachers utilize reinforcers to either strengthen student behaviors or motivate students to partake in things that will benefit the students in the long run. Ten or more classroom reinforcement categories include recognition, activities, privileges, tangible reinforcers, and token reinforcers. Recognition is a social reinforcer. These reinforcements include verbal, written, or non-verbal facial or bodily expressions. This can include a “Good job,” a note that says how great of a student they are, or a thumbs up. Activities reinforcers include privileges and preferred activities. This reinforcer includes playing a game or being the teacher’s helper for the day. Tangible or material reinforcers are objects valued in and of themselves. This can include certificates or a sweet treat. However, knowing that different students may have specific dietary restrictions is essential. The last type of reinforcer includes token reinforcers, a tangible item that can be exchanged for a desired object, activity, or social reinforcer. Token reinforcers can include points, stars, tickets, play money, or stickers. These reinforcers encourage appropriate behavior in many ways. Reinforcers are great incentives for all children, especially students who find it difficult to follow directions or behavior daily. An example of a reinforcer being used would be a student receiving a sticker at the end of each day. He would only receive a sticker if he behaved well for the day. Another example could be a student receiving a “thumbs up” for helping a friend. Those examples and many more are ways in which you encourage students to be on their best behavior. Social reinforcers or recognition are the most effective because they are something that we all long for. We all want to be included or feel a sense of community and belonging. Social reinforcements can include an “I’m proud of you,” a star on a student’s worksheet, or a high-five. “Recognition is especially valued by students when given by people important to them” (Burden, 2020, p. 96).
