2.
Which weekly objectives do you have no prior knowledge of?
3.
What course-related topics would you like to discuss with your instructor and classmates? What questions or concerns do you have about this course?
Objectives: 4.
Identify elements of the online classroom environment.
5.
Review available GCU academic resources.
6.
Apply graduate-level academic writing skills.
7.
Analyze graduate-level academic research requirements.
8.
Evaluate strategies for content engagement and time management.
9.
Explore the importance of faith integration and academic integrity.
Out of our six weekly objectives, I have prior knowledge of two. Through the Halo course I took earlier this week, I learned a lot about the different elements of the online classroom. Halo helped me in exploring the GCU resources offered to current students. On the other hand, when it came to objective number three, my knowledge was lacking. In the past I have only every used the writing format MLA. APA 7th Edition is a new format to me. The resources were helpful in explaining the style and its use. The last objective, faith integration, is also a new term to me. I’m excited to dig into these topics and learn more. Class introduction: Hello, my name is Sonja. I am 24 years old, from Atlanta, Georgia. I did my undergraduate at the University of West Georgia. I majored in Mass Communications with a concentration in Film and Media Studies with a minor in psychology. Through the Georgia Film Academy, I earned a certificate that allowed me to immediately be ready to work on set and was able to secure a job very quickly in my chosen field. I graduated in the winter of 2021 and have been working in the film industry ever since. I have worked on films such as Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Guardians' Holiday Special, Blade, and Electric State. My department of choice was Costumes, and within the year I plan on joining the union and becoming an official costumer. At the current moment I am working on DC's new up and coming film.
I decided to start my graduate degree so I can eventually teach film. Georgia has a special
program where industry professional who have an interest in teaching can in their chosen department. I plan on staying in the industry for a few more years before full transitioning to teaching. As much as I love working in film the lifestyle is not as suited to me. I work no less than 60 hours a week and it can take a toll. Teaching has always been where I wanted to end up and film is my passion. Combining both just seems like the dream.

here in the discussion forum. In your summary share one thing that you found helpful from the video. How might you utilize that information? What is a scenario in which you may need to refer to the video for guidance or support?
The goal of this discussion question is to provide summaries for all the help tutorials, so try to summarize one of the tutorials that has not already been summarized by another student. If all videos have already been summarized, your summary should include new or additional information/examples not already shared by another student.
For my Discussion post I chose to watch the video on Discussion Forums. This video explained the how the discussion board works and how to correctly post. The video went on to explain certain elements and highlights that can be helpful to a student’s success. For example, if you are
not ready to post, but have already written information into the box you can leave your post inside the box and your work will be automatically saved. Once you’ve posted you have the chance to edit or delete, unless it’s been over 24 hours, the post has been graded or it’s restricted. The post menu is another feature that makes negativing through names easier. If you are looking for a specific post just head over to the menu bar and click the post, you want to view. I found the information and demonstration about the menu bar very insightful. Instead of spending time scrolling through the varies post and replies, I can simply click on the name of the person I want to view. Discussion Post 2-A
After learning more about what GCU is all about by reading the GCU doctrinal statement and Christian Identity and Heritage, how do you think GCU’s Christian heritage makes the GCU academic experience different than at a non-faith-based university? What value will this difference add to your educational experience?
Your response must be 150-200 words.
During my bachelor’s degree I did not attend a Christian based university, so this will be a totally
new experience for me. I am Christian (Baptist specifically) and I have found that being surrounded by others helps me grow. I believe working with like-mind individuals who share the same believe with help me throughout this journey. If I am struggling in any aspect, I won’t be afraid talk to someone. I believe the Christian based education would help ground me. It will help bring mental peace. I will also find it easier to continue to practice and focus on my faith especially with it being in every aspect of my life. When attending my bachelor program, I never found a Christian based club or program and being away from home I struggled with my faith. I went from being able to attend my church every service to hardly going home. Having a faith-
based education or just a program in general would have helped during those years.

Discussion Post 3-A
Review “Title IX” in the topic resources and respond to the following:
What is Title IX and how does it impact you as a student?
Title IX prevents sex and gender discrimination in programs and actives that receive federal funding. The polices at Grand Canyon University applies to all students online and in-school. GCU insures they will take all steps to prevent any harassment that occurs. GCU’s Title IX Module list six of these behaviors covered by this policy. The first one is Quid Pro Quo, which covers any unwelcome sexual conduct that comes from an employee of the University. The second is sexual harassment, any unwelcome conduct from another person. The third includes any act of sexual assault. Dating violence and Domestic violence are the fourth and fifth. These cover any violence, on the basis of sex, committed by a romantic person or spouse (rather former
or current). The sixth is listed as stalking. The form also goes over and explains that it is prohibited to have any sexual conduct between student and employee of GCU. At the end of the Act, it explains how to file a complaint. For sexual harassment complaints multiple options are available. A victim can file criminal complaints, institutional complaints, anonymous complaints and confidential assistance. This Act helps protect students and is very resourceful in case any accident. Original Excerpt:
Our movie theaters and TV screens are crowded with depictions of violence. These depictions move us, which means they produce changes in our mental and physical attitudes and dispositions. Some of these fade away the moment we turn from the screen, but many of them linger, beneath the threshold of awareness. The violence we see in movies shapes our attitude toward violence in the real world. For example, a movie like The Dark Knight Rises (2012) is likely to subtly influence when we regard actual violence as natural or necessary. If a lot of people watch many movies that promote similar attitudes toward violence, that is bound to have a significant impact on the whole culture.
My Paraphrase: The human mind is easily swayed and can be easily influenced. Our films and shows are littered with violence and rage. Watching these can produce changes in our mental states unconsciously. Most of these emotions dissipate the moment we turn off our screens, but many
stay with us in our unconsciousness. The images we take in from the screens impact our reactions and feelings towards violence in the world around us. The Dark Knight suggests that violent reactions and actions are natural and necessary to achieve. This kind of suggested violence throughout films can have a cultural impact that is not beneficial to us as a society. References:

DQ 2
Why is it important to critically analyze sources? Why are scholarly sources more appropriate for academic research?
DQ’s
The DQ response must be 150-200 words and have at least one citation and one reference in APA format.
At this level of educational studies, programs and practice critical analysis is needed because the material given is more in-depth. Finding a reliable and credible source of information is imperative to our learning. Research-based work is focused on credible resources and work. Our work is improved by digging deeper and critically analyzing sources. With access to the internet, information can be spread across all channels in a matter of seconds, whether it’s accurate or false. GCU’s video on Evaluating Digital Sources really explains the growing effect social media has on our sources. Social media has made it easy to share information with others, accurate or not, and not all sources are not equal (GCU 2024). Articles published that are considered scholarly are examined by experts in the subjects and published with that credit. Academic research is improved by using these sources because they make the subject's work credible. Reference:

Read the "Policy Violations Scenarios" located in the Topic 2 Resources. As you read them, think about how these types of situations might arise in your academic career. How does academic dishonesty undermine the purpose of graduate school?
The DQ response must be 150-200 words and have at least one citation and one reference in APA format.
The Policy Violations talks about actions and behavior that go against code and ethics of the university. Academic dishonesty refers to action that is committed against the university that goes against the policies in place. Academic Dishonesty includes self-plagiarizing, plagiarizing, cheating, or allowing another to take your work. Graduate level work expects students to gain a set of skills and master albites in their chosen fields. Committing academic dishonesty completely destroys these abilities. When students aren’t honest and creating their own work critically and analytically, they run the risk of not learning what they need to in

order to do their job upon graduating. They also run the risk of not graduating at all. When reading this article, I didn’t realize that self-plagiarism was something that could be done. This article was very helpful and outlined important parts of why earning a degree honestly is important. References

Week THREE
Extra Post As we look at this topic on evaluating sources and their credibility, I was reminded of the Grievance Studies Affair.
Three College Professors began questioning the reliability and biases of academic journals in certain fields related to social sciences.
Review this so-called "hoax" that attempted to shed light on academic biases, and share your thoughts on this:

The article talked about an experiment that was meant to test the ability to produce bias work through gender and social science peer-reviewed journal. People have been known to take what

they in what they read and immediately accept it as fact. Many do not fact check anything and believe the first thing they hear. People are also known to stick to what they believe and take that
within themselves as fact. I believe it would be easy to get a biased journal through a peer-
viewed system solo based on what that reader believes. The peer view system was not set up in a way that biased information wouldn’t slip through. DQ 1
How is conducting graduate-level research different from research you did in your undergraduate program? Provide specific examples.
The DQ response must be 150-200 words and have at least one citation and one reference in APA format. Research in Undergraduate programs is not the same as graduate classes. Many undergrad programs do not have any research-based assignments. Personal for me I only did two or three research assignments. According to Scared Heart “Research in an undergraduate program is typically comprised of a few research projects or papers, whereas in graduate school, research makes up the vast majority of learning in the classes (SHU Graduate Admissions Team. 2024).” Depending on your program students generally have access to more advanced tools than undergrads. Graduate programs do a lot of research-based work in order to prepare their students for their chosen fields. My undergraduate studies weren’t focused on independent studies as much as graduate studies are. Research like this is very new concept to me, but I like research, so
I do not mind the process. I am excited to truly dig into research and learn more about this process.

DQ 2 Why is it important to evaluate sources for credibility, reliability, and bias? What are possible consequences for not evaluating sources for these items?
DQ’s
The DQ response must be 150-200 words and have at least one citation and one reference in APA format
It is super important to use credible, trustworthy, and unbiased sources. If you do not evaluate for these traits, you could end up with inaccurate or impartial information. Creating wrong judgements based on false information could lead to others drawling on the false information or even harm one’s reputation. Gathering trustworthy and true sources that are dependable and bias is crucial to create scholarly works. When researching and checking for credibility there is a need to check for bias. Bias can be unintentional. A group of people with a point to get across can narrow their view to use uncreditable and bias sources. However, most of the time these can go unnoticed by an author. It is very important to read your source carefully and watch for the factor that could make them an untrustworthy source. When you use high-quality sources to back
up your points, you demonstrate your own credibility as a writer, thereby contributing to the overall effectiveness of your argument (Watson Library).

On a LopesWrite report what does the similarity score indicate? What does the quoted text score indicate? Why is LopesWrite a valuable tool for students?
The DQ response must be 150-200 words and have at least one citation and one reference in APA format.
LopesWrite is a tool used by students for any paper or project over five hundred words. The university takes plagiarism seriously and LopesWrite helps with this. This tool checks grammar, spelling, and citation works. All submissions are reported with a similarity score, using the internet and other’s papers to check for plagiarism. The quoted text score helps students understand the percentage of words that appear in their quotes. This gives you an idea of how much of the work is yours verse how much is just quoted work from others. These tool helps students by letting them fix their assignments before submitting them for a grade. A student can use this tool as many times as they need until they get the score they desire. If your score is higher than 20 percent than should be viewed thoroughly by the student for plagiarism and to many similarities. References

WEEK FOUR DQ 1
Access and read the "Student Success Story." After you read the story, answer the following: What do you think is
the most important thing Jeannine did to change her situation and start to improve at school? Now that you are a graduate student, what are the lessons you learned during your undergraduate career that you will apply to your graduate studies to ensure you get the most out of this experience?
Making a list of everything that needs to be done is a very helpful time management tool. Carving out time just for studying and making a schedule that fits your needs are super important to master your education. She also took the time to learn the online software and played around with it to get more comfortable. Always check due dates and write down things you think you may forget. For myself making a list is so helpful and writing down important dates is the only way I remember due date. In my undergrad program I had certain days of the week that I would only focus on schoolwork. I would make sure I had everything completed within those days. Writing down important dates in both my planner and phone really help me. In my phone I can add dates, times, reminders and notes to help me keep track of everything I have going on. References

Networking is a vital way to market yourself. Online networking is an accessible way to make connections with people in your field. How do you plan on taking advantage of the online forums available to you as a GCU graduate student? How can attending events, meetings, or conferences relevant to the industry you work in (or would like to work in) assist you in staying motivated?
One way to start up a conversation is through your online discussion forms. If you are looking to network with someone starting, there is a good way to start. Reaching out to different university sources will also help one network. For instance, reaching out to career service office, joining virtual events that the university provides, or use school’s social media. You can use your schools social find events and others who are looking for the same things. Reaching out to professors and getting to know them can also point you into the direction of like mind individuals. For me attending social media events and any online networking events could be vital in helping me network through school. Reaching out to others and getting outside my comfort zone will help me along the way as well. References: Carlton, Genevieve. (2024). How to Network in an Online Program. The Best Schools.

Setting and achieving goals is essential to success. Being a graduate student provides a perfect opportunity to set and accomplish goals.
Reflect on the goals you would like to accomplish during your graduate program and upon completion of your program.
The DQ response must be 150-200 words.
As a graduate student I want make sure I am able to keep a high GPA. I would love to figure out a good balance of life and school and learn as much as I can. I am going for my Master of Arts in
Communication with a focus on Education, with a goal to teach one day. I have worked in the film industry for several years. My goal is to teach film at the university level. While I love this industry the heavy hours and presence needed are a lot on someone wanting to start a family. In my free time and between teaching I would love to jump in on small project here and there to make sure I never lose my Costuming skills. Film has also never been the end goal for me. I love
teaching and cannot wait to see what awaits me in the future.
