Summarize the sections read below: Picking up from where we left off, we are now on pages 407 and finishing out the textbook. Within this section of the text, there is much discussion
about classroom management. The beginning portion of the reading section discusses different strategies and scenarios where a teacher can consider consequences and corrections. If a student is having persistent and repetitive negative behavior, the author advises for a teacher to decide on
a consequence. If there is a high level of disruption involved in a student’s behavior, it is also recommended to give a consequence. On the contrary, if a student’s negative behavior is not distracting others, then it is recommended to give a correction instead. Correcting first also exudes confidence since it demonstrates to others that you can obtain compliance without using a
penalty. On the other hand, if you start with a punishment, you are much more likely to elicit an emotional reaction or a student meltdown.
One aspect of this material I enjoyed was the topic of having a strong voice. The text explains that having a strong voice means to affirm your authority as the teacher with confident and controlled verbal and non-verbal habits. The text explains six principles of strong voice: using a formal register, square up/stand still, exude quiet power, use economy of language, do
not talk over, and do not engage. These principles emphasize for teachers to use deliberate verbal
and nonverbal behaviors to demonstrate your authority, especially when you need to exert control.
What classroom applications can you apply this information to in your practicum? I can apply so much from what I learned in this chunk of reading. When I was a preschool teacher, I witnessed many coworkers yelling and screaming at the students. Even in my first practicum, my cooperating teacher would exert her authority by yelling at the students. I think learning strategies on how to speak to students is important. I like how the content explains
that you need to be assertive with your students but also not to engage in certain actions that are harmful or may hurt a student’s feelings. I will definitely implement what I learned because if I were a parent, I would not want my student to be screamed at by their teacher. I will implement confidence and self-control when I am speaking to my students. It was interesting to read the different scenarios about when to use a consequence and when to correct a student. I think learning which one to use will come with experience, but it is definitely helpful for new and incoming teachers that may be unsure how to address students that are acting out negative behaviors. I like how the information in the textbook felt more like a handbook than a textbook. The author truly had teachers in mind, as the techniques covered in this book are so relatable, helpful, and contains practices I can easily apply in my classroom!
