Report
Date: March 24, 2024 To: Professor John Barbour From: Emma Crownover Subject: Proposal for Final Report in WRD 204: Technical Writing Introduction This proposal establishes my legitimacy and outlines a plan for the completion of the upcoming final report in WRD 204: Technical Writing. Establishing my report purpose and very specific audience, I guide the reader through a persuasive memo on how I will complete my writing on the reduction of sleep related infant deaths for in-home childcare providers in my area. The National Survey of Early Care and Education Household Public-Use Survey identifies 29.5 percent of infants and toddlers attend home-based child-care as their primary arrangement (Paschall). Nearly one in three young children is being taken care of in a largely unregulated setting yet this report will inform care providers in my area how to do that safely. Statement of Purpose The purpose of my final report in WRD 204 is to inform on best practices to help lower the risk of sleep related infant deaths, including Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) for unlicensed in-home daycare providers of infants (under 12 months) in Nashville, Tennessee. Primary Audience My intended audience consists of sole proprietors, small business owners, and mostly women operating a small scale in-home childcare business from their home. In TN, single- worker, in-home, infant caregivers cannot legally watch enough infants at a time to require licensure and oversight from the state. TN state infant ratios are 4:1 yet in-home day care licensure becomes available when watching more than 5 children (Tennessee, pg 4). Therefore,
in Nashville, TN in-home infant childcare providers are solely responsible for curating a safe sleep environment to protect their clients from accidental death. Background Discussion of overarching issue/topic: The larger conversation that this report fits into is known as the conversation of “infant safe sleep practices”. Although many baby sleep products are sold with warnings printed on the packaging or sewn into the products, there are lots of very popular baby products that are not technically intended for sleep but are very popularly used for infant sleep. Baby products and especially baby sleep products can promise to provide enticing results to caregivers trying to help a fussy baby to sleep so that they won’t heed the warnings. As a result baby products like the baby loungers, marketed as a resting space for awake babies but very popularly used for baby sleep, pose a risk to infants at in-home childcare. So much so that “Staff at the Consumer Product Safety Commission have proposed a major redesign of most baby loungers and similar infant cushions, citing 79 deaths from 2010 to 2022” (Khimm). Genre of report: I will be conducting an informational report. I do not feel qualified to produce a recommendations report because I am not a licensed pediatrician or physician. Plan of Work Methods and procedures for conducting primary research: I have identified my audience as being childcare providers that watch infants under 12 months out of their own homes in Nashville, TN. I know some of these providers personally, I am one myself, and I interact with many of them online using a Facebook group platform “Nashville Childcare Connection”. When parents post an ad searching for childcare, very often they will indicate a desire for a “safe environment” for their child. Like Aleshia Stewart stated in a post Jan 25, 2022 “I’m looking for an in-home daycare that is located in Antioch that’s reliable and safe! I have a 16-month-old girl!”
( Nashville ). I will use these posts of parents seeking childcare as well as posts of providers advertising their in-home infant care to better understand my audience and their needs. When childcare providers post an ad on the local Nashville Facebook group advertising a spot in their in-home daycare, sdxzx many times they will include credentials to classify their services. Typically, this will consist of over 10 years of experience in childcare, a breadth of work in more traditional settings and otherwise, and sometimes the expertise of being a parent themselves. A great example of this is a post by Lydia Simmons that states at the end her accolades “I have plenty of strong references to provide, 10 years of experience as both a teacher and childcare provider for age 2 months to 18 years old. (I can forward my resume to anyone interested to provide more details on my background) I also grew up with my mother’s in home daycare and being the go-to nanny for after school hours until the age of 19. I am CPR and First Aid certified, credentialed teacher k-12 and early childhood as well. I am active, patient, creative and caring” (Nashville). They have formal background typically but are operating with-in unregulated territory with no clear guidebook. My report however will give clear information about safe sleep for this overlooked industry of infant supervision in Nashville. Methods and procedures for conducting secondary research: I focused my safe sleep research on recommendations that would be most relevant to my audience, childcare providers watching infants under 12 months. The CDC published guidelines that the TN state legislature also references in 2022 indicating that medical professionals and researchers do not know the exact cause of death in the circumstances of SIDS but there are steps caregivers can take to reduce the risk as much as possible (Center). These recommendations, echoed by the American Academy of Pediatrics’ policy report, consist of laying baby to sleep on their back, on a firm flat mattress with a tight sheet and no other blankets or pillows. Also avoiding overheating with appropriate

dress is important (Rachel). There are many more sleep recommendations that are out of the control of a caregiver like whether a baby is breastfed, vaccinated, provided a pacifier, exposed to nicotine outside of the childcare hours, etc. I will utilize the recommendations from the AAP’s report that are relevant to a non-custodial day-time caregiver. Schedule of Work Gannt Chart: # Task 3/25 3/29 3/31 4/3 4/17 4/24 1 Peer review 2 Review proposal 3 Professor Conference 4 Final Project Update Memo 5 Primary Research Stage 6 Final Project Submission Evaluation Techniques My plan for evaluating my techniques is to utilize the class for Peer review resources. Furthermore, I’ve scheduled my professor consultation for this Friday at 10AM CST. Qualifications I have worked in child-care since I was literally a child. I had my first babysitting job in my neighborhood that I walked to at the age of 12. During the summers in high school I worked as a full-time nanny, I lived and work for a year as an Au Pair in Spain, I’ve worked at a Montessori pre-school, and I currently work full time at my home as a childcare provider for infants and toddlers. Having worked in both an in-home and facility setting I have experience
adhering to regulations from a licensed facility as well as navigating sleep practices advised by parents. My 10 years of experience in this industry makes me an expert to compile this informational report on safe sleep for my specific audience because I have worked in so many different childcare settings that I understand the unique challenges of un-regulated and in-home infant care. Infant parents may recommend unsafe practices but a prepared member of my audience will be equipped with the knowledge of in-home daycare sleep safety. Works Cited Khimm, S., & Chuck, E.
