Reflection Essay Introduction
Before starting this class, I thought I was going to learn the basics of communication and how it applies to business. I thought I would study the different types of communication and how
to improve my communication skills when I interact with others. What I gained from the course was these and so much more. I learned how to organize my thoughts when preparing to give a presentation or speech through a cluster map. I learned the value and importance of non-verbal communication, I learned how to overcome the fear of communicating with others or in a large group, I learned how to develop a better sense of self-conception, and I learned different conflict styles. As I look back over this course, I have learned skills that will contribute to my personal and professional life. Week 1
In week one I learned about the basics of public speaking and how to prepare for a speech. Preparing is an important aspect to speaking or giving a speech and knowing your audience. The skills that I learned in week 1, not only will I use this in my personal life with I have to communicate with others while interacting at church, but I will use this in my professional life. Being prepared and having an understanding of my audience will allow me to be more successful and confident when I am communicating with others.
Week 2
Learning about self-concept and my belief in myself was one of my favorite learning materials in this course. Understanding myself and my self-worth and value helped me feel more aware and successful in my daily life. I focused on how I was interacting with my loved ones and

the way my influence can and would affect them. I wanted to view myself with more self-worth in order to see them with more love and kindness.
Week 2 also taught me about map clusters. I have really enjoyed using map cluster since learning more about them. I have been able to use a map cluster to gather my thoughts and help me understand what I want to communicate about in a seamless way. Using a map cluster, helped
me save time, feel more prepared, organize my thoughts, and visualize my ideas. This skill will benefit me now and, in the future, as I continue writing essays, emails, and in the professional world. Week 3 I have always enjoyed people watching and observing what others do. As I learned more about perception and non-verbal communication, my love for people watching grew! It was very interesting to observe others without jumping to conclusions. I was able to have a better understanding of what I was seeing and used the skills of non-verbal communication to gain a better understanding. So much of our communication is non-verbal, so I have used this skill and have started looking at the bigger picture when communicating with my husband and my children. I have come to better understand what they need and want. Week 4
As I was preparing to give my informative speech and when I gave it, I learned about the skills needed in order to appear professional and confident. As I was giving my speech, I was aware of the words I was saying and the way I was standing, down to the way I was moving my hands. I did find that I was very focused on looking professional, that I had a hard time recalling my speech and what I wanted to share. Week 5

I found it very interesting that listening would be considered a form of communication. As I learned more about listening and the value of being an active listener, I found myself trying harder to develop this skill. I have a hard time not interrupting when I am very engaged in a conversation. I become excited and what I add to the conversation or give my opinion. I made it my focus to become an active listener in conversations and wait to add my thoughts when the other person is done. I also focused on being an active listener to my Savior, Jesus Christ. I want to be able to hear and recognize his voice better in my life. It’s easy for me to brush off my thoughts and feelings as my own, instead of giving Him credit.
Week 6 I love learning about relationships and how to better resolve conflict and how to apply it into my relationship with my husband, my family, and people I interact with. Something that I really enjoyed learning from this week was reading Moroni and Pahoran. I gained a lot of insight
from Pahoran and his response. The way that he focused on the bigger picture and the stress that Moroni was under instead of becoming defensive was very inspiring. I want to apply this skill more into my relationships and interactions with others. I know when I do, I will be able to better
communicate and understand others. Conclusion
Communication is something that we all do on a daily basis from our talking with our family to waving at people while we’re driving or walking. Having positive communication skills is vital to having successful relationships. As we seek to communicate more effectively with others, we can strengthen our family and build a closer relationship with our Heavenly Father and Savior, Jesus Christ.
