EDU-315: Family and Community in a Supportive Learning Environment

To Whom It May Concern,
I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Celeste Stevenson, and I am a second-
grade teacher at Perry Elementary located in League City, TX. I am writing to you in hopes that we can partner together to better help our community with primary care medical assistance. Unfortunately, many of our students and their families do not have medical insurance and cannot afford primary care expenses or do not have federal medical assistance for various reasons. While the school provides basic vision and hearing tests yearly, our school
nurses do not have the resources to provide the basic primary care our students require. When families can be at peace knowing their children have primary medical care and students are healthy or able to manage their medical issues, it makes for better academic success. We at Perry Elementary believe that Lighthouse Christian Ministries can provide significant change through some propositions found in this letter.
It is no surprise that healthy students make better students, increase school attendance which also prevents school dropout, and can set a foundation of overall success. Perry Elementary believes in the holistic wellbeing of our students, and so, we have come up with two goals we believe are attainable with your help. With medical assistance available to students, the two tangible goals would be to see increased attendance and higher academic success. To reach those goals, we believe LCM can partner with us in three specific areas: the provision of free medical care to students, the provision of free dental care for students, and the
provision of free or low-cost prescriptions medications or glasses to those who need them. We also want to come up with a screening procedure to ensure that those who need the care are the
ones receiving it. We realize that this comes at a cost for you, so we do want to partner with
you in fundraising to help offset the costs these services will bring. We also hope that this partnership will bring your organization more volunteers and donations. We at Perry Elementary have come up with opportunities that could be helpful in kickstarting this partnership and connecting our school with our community. These are basic ideas, but I would love the opportunity to sit down with your team to discuss it in better detail and use your expertise to craft successful outreach. Here are some of the outreach ideas we have:
1.
Free Dental Clinic: On the first Saturday of the month, we would like to run a free dental clinic for students in need. Through a screening process, we hope to have 10-15 students per monthly clinic to provide them with dental x-rays (if possible), dental cleanings, and cavity care. We would also like to send them home with proper dental hygiene products.
2.
Free Medical Clinic: On the third Saturday of the month, we would like to run a free medical clinic for students in need. Through a screening process, we hope to have 15-20 students per monthly clinic to provide them with primary care physicals and any necessary medications or treatments they may need. We would also like to send them home with proper health and hygiene products.
3.
Open House Booth: To get the word out about the free clinics and to promote Lighthouse Christian Ministries to our community, we would love to have an LCM booth at our Open House in the Fall and in the Spring. This would allow families to interact with your organization, receive free hygienic products, but also provide a means for families who are willing to contribute to your

organization and the good it is doing for our community. This could also be a great opportunity for medical professionals within our school families to see what you are doing and get involved to give back.
To ensure successful promotion, we will use all communication resources that we have with our school families. We will promote these events on all our social media platforms, continual website promotion, emails will be sent to every family, and we will create flyers to send home with each child of every grade. Our teachers will also communicate these opportunities for medical assistance with their classes through communication apps like ClassDojo and emails. Because these events will be school specific, we do not think it necessary to promote these outreach events on your part (unless you would like to). I look forward to hearing from you about this partnership to better help the students in our school and
our community. Thank you for your time!
Sincerely, Celeste Stevenson
