Explore Academic Skills and Strategies – Better Grades!
Description: You will use this assignment to explore a new academic skill and its associated strategies and compare it to a strategy that you currently practice for your college classes. You will first need to decide which skill will be your focus (
Reading, Note Taking, Writing, Studying, or Test Taking)
. Select one of these academic skills and use resources provided from the study activities to develop your ideas and provide key supporting details to explain the strategies. You
will also conduct your own research to find at least two resources (these can be websites) that provide information related to the academic skill and its strategies, which will be shared at the end of this assignment.
Select only one topic to explore
(reading, note taking, writing, studying, or test taking). Both strategies, new and old, should relate to the same topic
. Pay attention to the verbs bolded and underlined
in the directions.
Getting Started
List the single academic skill you are going to focus on for this entire assignment (reading, note taking, studying, writing, quantitative literacy, or information literacy). Note Taking
Part A – Describe (your current strategy and a new strategy – both related to the same skill you typed in the box above.)
Identify
your current strategy (related to the skill listed above) and in a minimum of 125 words describe
the details of this strategy. Explain
how you use the strategy to be successful in your college classes.
My current strategy for note taking in my college is the “Lists” strategy. So far this has not been going well for me. I am not a fast enough writer to jot down all those notes fast enough.
For me personally this strategy works but it is very risky. I say that because, for me writing down information lets my brain remember it. So, it is important to me to write down everything that is on the board. This strategy is very risky for me though because sometimes I
take a while to write down all the notes on the board and then the teacher moves on to the next topic or next slide and I might miss some important information on the previous slide or topic.

Identify
the NEW academic strategy (related to the same skill listed above) you researched in the module and in a minimum of 125 words describe
the details of the strategy. Explain
how you will use this new strategy to be successful in your college classes.
I think a new note strategy that I am interested in trying is the “Cornell Method”. The “Cornell Method” is a two-column note taking approach. The right column of the “Cornell Notes takes up only about two-thirds of the page. The right column is strictly for just taking notes. You can put anything you find important on the note slides in the right column. The left column of the “Cornell Notes” only takes up about a third of the page of notes. After class
you should review the right side of the “Cornell Notes”. After you review the right side, you just jot down any key ideas and concepts or even some questions you have on the left side of the columns. I think that this new note-taking strategy will help me write down notes a lot faster and a lot more organized. This will also help me right clearer notes so that I can understand what I am writing down a lot better. I think this note-taking strategy will help me so much during my college career. I will be trying this out to see if it works for me. Part B – Compare
Compare
how the new academic strategy you researched is similar
to the strategy that you already use to prepare, work through, and review for your college classes with a minimum of 125 words.
I think that my new note-taking strategy is similar to my old note-taking strategies because in
both strategies I am quickly jotting down anything I can write. These strategies are also very similar in the ways that they help me learn. I have learned that when I write my notes down on a piece of paper it helps me learn what the professor is going over. In both my old note-
taking strategy and my new note-taking strategy I am writing down information to help me learn the material that is being taught better. One more thing that I think is similar between my old note-taking strategy and my new note-taking strategy is that they are both clear and easy to read and understand. In my old note-taking strategy no matter how much information I would write down I would always make sure that the notes weren’t disorganized and sloppy. This made is so much easier to understand when I went back to review my notes. My new note-taking strategy promotes the same kind of thing. There is only
one difference. My new note-taking strategy kind of forces me to keep my notes clear and easy to understand just by the way that it is set up. The “Cornell Notes” forces you to keep your writing to a minimum and only focus on the important stuff from the lesson. Then it forces you to go back after the lesson is over and review the notes and write down any key ideas or questions that you have about the lesson. In summary, both my old note-taking strategy and my new note-taking strategy promote organized notes.

Part C – Contrast Contrast
how the new academic strategy you researched differs from how you currently prepare, work through, and review for your college classes with a minimum of 125 words.
I think that my new note-taking strategy differs from my old note-taking strategy by first off how they are set up. My new note-taking strategy forces me to make two columns and write the notes in the right column. Then after the class is over my new note-taking strategy forces me to go back to the notes that I took and review them. Then after reviewing the notes, I took in class it forces me to write down any key ideas or questions I have about the notes that I took in the right column. On the other hand, my old note taking strategy literally only forced me to write down the notes in class and nothing else. When I would use my old note taking strategy first off, it was very hard to keep up with the pace of the class because I would
have to write down so much on the page. Second off, when I was using my old note-taking strategy I would rarely go back and review my notes right after class. I would only review my notes when a test was in the nearby future. Lastly, my old note-taking strategy would never force me to pick out the key ideas of the notes I took or even write down any questions I had about the notes that I took. Part D – Evaluate Now that you have had time to research a new strategy and compare it to your current efforts in college courses, evaluate
which of the two strategies you believe will better prepare you for your college classes and describe how and why with a minimum of 125 words.
I think that my new strategy will totally change the way that I take notes in college. Now that I am learning about my new “Cornell Notes” strategy I feel enlightened to a much better way to take notes in class. I think that my new note taking strategy the “Cornell Notes” method, will help me keep my notes organized. I think that my new strategy will also help me understand the material that I am learning much better. I also think that my new strategy will
help me be able to write down all the information that I need to the test much faster in class. 2ce6e6c03b055a3ca0caab479ecd17236ffbba80.docx

Therefore, I will not miss any important information on the notes slides in class. I think this note-taking strategy is just one more huge step to my college success in the future. Part E – Summarize Provide two (or more) resources you used, not included in the study activities, to research this academic skill and new strategies and summarize
how each one of the two resources was helpful to you. Resource 1:
University of New South Wales: Techniques and Tips for Listening and Notes Taking
Summary: This website that I used to answer the question above provide so many examples of different note-taking strategies that students can use. Even better, under every single strategy, there is a few sentences description of the strategy. Resource 2

Summary: This website not only compares and contrasts some note-taking strategies that
are recommended to use. This website also gives helpful tips on how to take good, efficient, and organized notes.
