Module One Prompt: Communication is Key Veronica Freire SNHU IT 226 Instructor Kimberly Melanson 09/03/2023
Module one Prompt: Communication is Key Communication is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior. As I am now learning through this first module, there are different types of communication which make sense. If I really think about it, the way in which I speak and present myself at work is completely different from the way that I speak at school or even at home. From my understanding, academic communication refers to the different methods of effectively communicating and presenting ideas in a scholastic environment. Some examples of academic communication can be speaking in a conference presentation and writing a grant proposal. Professional communication is recognized as a subfield of communication that is used within the professional context. From experience, I have learned that almost every professional field has a special language that is used to communicate from professional to professional. I have been in the healthcare industry for almost 10 years now and know from experience that we use the language of medicine to understand what the other person is telling us. I am now switching careers from medicine to technology and have learned that the technological field also has a special language that is used to understand each other, the language of programming. A good example of professional communication would be reports. You must learn to write reports in a specific way for your fellow coworkers to understand if there needs to be any changes or updates. Another type of professional communication that is used often would be the usage of emails. I know I use my email at least a few times a day to keep my supervisor updated on any special projects that I may be working on. From my understanding, technical communication is generally focused on making technical information understandable by using technology to make information more usable in various workplaces. For an example I will be using my own experience. At work, we recently had a change in a specific website that we use to check on insurance eligibility. We went from having to use one login
credential to now each of us having our own login credentials. The website also changed its formatting which caused loads of confusion between me and other coworkers. We were unsure on how to use the website and I kept being asked if I could help with checking eligibility. I noticed that almost no one knew how to use the new website, so I took some time from my day to try and figure it out. I then used Microsoft word to create a “How to” guide and posted it to our SharePoint making it accessible to all which really helped. Another good example would be taking statistical data that was being collected from smart devices and reorganizing said data and making it understandable for a presentation. In conclusion, I really do believe that communication is a vital skill to have as a STEM professional. So much vital information can be easily lost in communication if not said correctly. It is important to learn how to communicate properly and professionally so that others at your workplace can understand you.
