My job is like 98% communication, there are a lot of pieces that need to fit together to help people properly mourn and handle the funeral services for their loved ones. From the very beginning we have to
ask questions and pass them on to the next person to take care of the transfer, to passing on information
regarding pre-planning and how are we handling the disposition, i.e. embalming or cremation. For embalming, we need to know if we are shaving facial hair, which is so much easier to do before the process than after. Cosmetics, hair and casketing are questions we need answered before the funeral and
I do not meet with the family, I’m working on information second hand and people expect details that we need to follow. To be successful, communication keeps the business floating.
I prefer visual-communications because it helps me remember what I need to do, because I’m working on 4-5 people at a time and I need to keep everything straight. I’m also a visual learner and I can remember things when I see them in writing.
I think attention to detail will help enhance communication. Asking questions and building a foundation to get the detail is very important. Also having things in writing can help keep everybody up to speed.
