Mainstreaming is the process by which governments and other stakeholders ensure that persons with disabilities participate equally with others in any activity and service intended for the general public (WHO, 264). It is important to understand that just because an individual has a disability that does not mean that they do not have needs for things that an able-bodied individual would have. These things include health, well-being, economic security, and successfully living in their own community. These are all things that an able-bodied individual will have access to with no limitations so persons with disability should have equal access. One step that I would personally take in order to support this recommendation would be to encourage individuals to promote mainstreaming on their social media. We all know that this generation social media plays a huge role in our lives and it
is the quickest way to spread information so if one advocates for this on their
social media and it goes viral this is a quick way to promote this information. Another step that I would personally take to advocate for this would be at my
workplace. I would ask if I can hand out flyers because my job is extremely popular due to the fact that we host a lot of different sporting events on campus. I feel as if this would be a way to spread the information rapidly and
be a huge support to ensure that my workplace is mainstream and accessible and others could fight for that as well if they had the information to do so. The second recommendation is about increasing the public's understanding of disability. I believe that the most important component that
this recommendation discusses is the need to confront negative perceptions of persons with disabilities and the stigmas that surround it. A step that I would personally take would be correcting someone if they do not use the correct language. It is important to use person first language when discussing persons with disabilities or even talking to an individual with a disability so if I see someone using the wrong terminology I would personally correct. A second step that I would personally take in order to support this recommendation would be to promote different pages that raises awareness
for those with disabilities. As I stated above social media is a huge rapid way to spread information and often times your followers can see the different pages that you like and interact with so personally I believe that if I followed more disability awareness pages this would allow all of my followers to check
them out and look over the different information that they offer to better educate themselves on disabilities and gain a better understanding of different disabilities.
