(1) Describe an interaction that you have had with an individual with a disability that is memorable to you and/or has impacted your life. (2) Create and write three sentences that exhibit the use of People First Language. Reflect on why you think using People First Language is important. (See Snow, 2009 Links to an external site. ) NOTE : Citations and references are not required for this reflection but are required for reflections in subsequent modules. Brief explanations and examples of citations and references are available here. 1. When I was in middle school I met a young boy named Christian. He was extremely sweet however Christian had autism spectrum disorder and was nonverbal. Although he was nonverbal he was the sweetest person I ever met. It was later revealed that Christian had a terminal brain tumor that he unfortunately passed away from three years after I met him. He always had a smile on his face and was playing with toy cars every time I saw him around campus. I can honestly say Christian played a huge role in my life by allowing me to begin to understand what autism was and how it affected people differently. Although he was nonverbal he was extremely smart and he found ways to communicate. I can say that this was memorable for me and definitely changed my life by giving me a new insight on different individuals who have autism spectrum disorder. 2. Andrew has autism and is a student at the University of Florida studying journalism. Accessible parking is a key component for individuals with disabilities especially those who uses a wheelchair. Emily has a learning disability however, she was still able to become a successful lawyer at a private law firm. People first language is important because it sees the person before the disability. Having a disability does not define you. You are a human first and having people use the correct language is crucial in order to make sure that you are seen as a human and not a “disabled” human. Inclusivity is important for individuals with disabilities and being recognized as a person first is a way to ensure that they are valued and respected as citizens.
