Cowan-Phillips Approach to Literacy 1 My Approach to Literacy Assignment Christie Cowan-Phillips Eastern Gateway Community College, EDU 203 Dr. Theresa Paterra October 31, 2021
Cowan-Phillips Approach to Literacy 2 My Approach to Literacy Assignment In teaching students to read there are three types of learning approaches, emergent learning, whole-language learning, and balanced approach learning. In the reading it was hard to determine which one to pick since it seems they are all good approaches to teaching children to read. As I researched more about it, it seems that a balanced approach is the way to teach reading to children and here is why according to Adams. In a balanced approach to literary instruction, teachers integrate instruction with authentic reading and writing and experience so that, students learn how to use literacy strategies and skills and have opportunities to apply what they are learning. (Adams 1990 pg.1 para.1) In researching I found that mixing phonics or emergent learning with whole language becomes a balanced approach to learning. This type of teaching helps students not only grasp letter sounds but with pictures they can visualize and see what they are looking at and understand that what they see makes that sound. That really helps those visual and auditory learners. “Us ing the balanced literacy approach to teach reading has made an immense difference in learning for my students. They are more engaged, excited about all of the reading and writing happening in our classroom, and they are successful in displaying growth!” ( Richardson, 2016) I picked the balanced approach because I feel like it is a perfect mix of all the learning approaches together. It has phonics in it which will help the children that need to see pictures to

I would use the balance literacy approach in my classroom, unless there is a new and better approach by the time, I become a teacher.
