Assessing English
Language Learners
Hello families!
The purpose of this newsletter is to provide
you with information that will assist you in explaining the different
types of assessments your student will be receiving this year. I strongly believe that staying informed will be a key to a successful
year as accommodations for testing and information obtained from assessments will be used to plan and make educational decisions.

Below are three Types Of Assessments that will be given to
your children
Diagnostics Assessments- We will conduct this assessment at the beginning of the year to see where your students are in the language learning process and how much knowledge they already possess. As I prepare lesson plans to instruct your student, this assessment will prove extremely useful. The key thing about this assessment is that it will allow me to meet the needs of the student in the classroom.
Formative assessment- These types of assessments are performed almost everyday, they are informal check-ins, as lessons are being taught, along with activities. This will be important to make sure that your student is engaging with the daily lesson and to also assess if they are track. This will also make adjustments as I continue to move forward with the lesson.
Summation assessment- this is another type of assessment that is given usually at the end of every unit, or end-of quarter or end of semester. The purpose of this type of assessment is to provide information of whether
the students have achieved their educational objectives. This assessment is more formal but are not like formative assessments, where you get immediate support.
It is important that when an EL student is assessed it aligns with the students' content standards/goals along with their language
standards /goals. Throughout a particular subject area, standards specify what students should know and be able to do, while curriculum shapes how students learn knowledge, skills, and abilities. In terms of language learning opportunities and demands, ELP standards also reflect and align with content standards to assess student learning. Students should know and be able to do certain things within a certain content area, but curriculum describes how they will acquire those skills, knowledge, and abilities. Assessments provide evidence regarding student learning. To allow teachers to understand how students are doing
and where they need help, data from ELP standards and content standards is used.
Aligning Assessments to Standards
Testing accommodations will be provided to ESL students to make sure they are prepared to succeed. This does not mean I will have lower expectations of them, nor will the content or test be easier. In other words, I will work to find ways to help your student access the information they need to demonstrate what they have learned. Accessibility features and accommodations 2022). My accommodations include English to primary language dictionaries, text-to-speech software, which students can find on their Chromebooks, extra time for assessments, and if they have a phone, a translator app can be used. Because they are not allowed to use a phone during state assessments, they are different. Your student has a right to have these kinds of supports to help them succeed.
In order to reach your students' goals, communication and feedback are imperative. Effective feedback should be timely, ongoing and specific, clearly identifying what is working and what needs improvement. In my role as your child's teacher, I would like
to maintain continuous communication between you, your child, and me. In order to make this happen, I would like to always provide positive feedback to your students in the classroom in a way that supports and encourages them. I look forward to working with you and your amazing team. They will also be provided with solutions and direction for what they excel at. To me this will be the key to a successful growth in your student.
