- Is “willful ignorance” the same as lying? - Does working for an unethical company make you unethical? - How do you deal with unethical people? - Does our society reward unethical behavior? - What can we do? o On a personal level? o On an organizational level? o On a societal level? All of these important questions need to be accounted for when it comes to dealing with business ethics. While some of these questions seem like they have an easy answer, certain ideals and considerations need to be made to understand why some of these answers may be different from what one would expect. Discussion points: - Honesty is a recognizable virtue in people. It is the make or break of proper workplace ethics and many people take advantage of their power to better themselves rather than their company. - The limitless number of different values and incentives that people may have will ultimately improve or worsen a company’s success and ethical standards. - While it is important to recognize your own personal values and principles, there are certain valuable learning curves that come with a lack of honesty, which contributes to an opportunity for personal and company growth in the future. - Individuals can prioritize ethical conduct, educate themselves on important communication ethics, and be accountable for the choices that they make. - As a company, promoting transparency for employees can help lead to a valuable work culture that continues to strive for better. - Any form of neglecting or hiding the truth is considered lying, but it is important to recognize the reasoning behind these actions and understand why these choices were made. Sometimes this can help better the overall growth of the individual, the company, and society, and can be a useful tool or example of how to handle a certain situation better. Conclusion: Communication ethics is of utmost importance in the workplace and organization. By adhering to ethical ideals, individuals and teams can build positive relationships, maintain a healthy work environment, and enhance productivity. Unethical communication can have negative consequences, leading to misunderstandings and conflicts. It is crucial to observe ethics in communication by practicing active listening, empathy, and upholding honesty and integrity. By embracing ethical communication, organizations can establish trust, credibility, and a positive reputation.
