Permalink Reply Re: Discussion 5 | Children and Adolescents by Karla Mejia - Tuesday, February 6, 2024, 9:16 PM Children and juveniles witness tragedies and other traumatic occurrences every year. Youth need the support of trusted adults, Q d friends to help them deal with these life events. Following a traumatic event, such as a violent crime, or serious accident, it is com.. .or kids and teenagers to exhibit a variety of emotions. Youth may report experiencing negative symptoms like fatigue, nightmares, or other
sleep issues, such as avoidance of going to bed. They may even find it difficult to focus and lose interest in things they enjoyed doing along with guilt for not stopping accidents or fatalities. Some juveniles might even feel like they need to take matters into their own hands and believe that taking retribution is necessary. Juveniles may require consolation, support, and assurance following a traumatic event to help them feel safe, cope with their anxieties, work through their grief, and aid in their successful recovery. When frightening things happen, kids turn to adults for comfort. Schedules help assure kids that everything will be alright even in crises and changes. An online source states that “In America, one in every fourteen children will lose a parent or sibling before the age of eighteen, and most have suffered a major loss by the time they graduate from high school. The New York Life Foundation has made childhood grief a major focus area over the past ten years after realizing how important it is to offer more support to grief-stricken children and their families.” (Speaking Grief | Understanding Grief: Childhood Bereavement Resources, n.d.). The goal of the non-profit organization Eluna is to assist kids and families who are dealing with addiction or loss. Their creative programs and resources meet the critical needs of kids going through intense, overwhelming, and frequently perplexing emotions related to a loved one's death or substance abuse in the household. Intending to prevent complications from unresolved childhood grief and loss and end the cycle of addiction in the following generation, Eluna's programs support children and their families. Aiding students through crisis and loss is the mission of Children's Hospital Los Angeles' National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement (NCSCB). Their professionals have been helping hundreds of American and international schools and communities recover from tragedies since 1990. They have been instrumental in promoting perseverance in the wake of major events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Trade Center terrorist attacks, and school and community gun violence. By fostering a secure and encouraging environment, practicing maximum mental toughness, and minimizing stress, caretakers and close relatives can lend a hand. It is important for kids and teenagers to understand that their family members value them and love them. The "Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration" provides a Disaster Distress Support line, which individuals can call to get immediate crisis counseling if they are experiencing emotional distress related to any natural or human-caused catastrophic event. Available 24 hours per day, 7 days out of the week, the helpline is free, confidential, and provides various languages. Congress created the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in 1992 with the goal of enhancing the availability of services, inquiries, and data pertaining to substance abuse and mental disorders. In addition to emphasizing fairness, trauma-informed practices, rehabilitation, and dedication to data and evidence, the new Initiative maintains the promotion, prevention, and treatment pattern as its core principle.
