What Our Students Need Now: Virtual
School Culture That Is Healthy, Just and Strong.
"At a time when many students are learning in virtual settings, educators and administrators must address
discriminatory policies and practices that often contribute to disproportionate discipline." Review the
recommendations for creating safer and more inclusive learning environments using evidence-based
strategies that empower students to learn and thrive." Discuss one of the recommendations you feel is
significant in your virutal learning environment.
Part I:
The four principles that teachers should adopt an additive stance toward the culture and
language of their students exude a positive disposition, recognize cultural and experiential
backgrounds, address language status, and support the development of academic English. The
first is to exude a positive disposition which means that teachers should have an awareness of
their student’s cultural and linguistic heritage as well as their communication styles, and of the
students’ dialects of English. The second is recognizing cultural and experiential backgrounds
which translates into teachers’ need to learn about their students’ lives and make connections
between students’ experiences and interests. This will fill the gaps found in the curriculum by the
teachers adding relevant examples of diversity so the students can better understand. Next is
addressing language status which means that teachers should take the stance that multilingualism
and dialect variation are natural, meaning that teachers need to have students realize that being
bilingual is a highly valued assessment in the workforce. The fourth is to support the
development of academic English which means that teachers should focus instruction on
intellectually rich and engaging tasks that allow students to use academic English.
The HSS disciple of my choosing is Students living in poverty, the theme I will choose is
the Great Depression which is 11.6 Students analyze the different explanations for the Great
Depression and how the New Deal fundamentally changed the role of the federal government. I
will meet the diverse needs of English learners by framing questions as I lecture, this will engage
all students for an open discussion forum as well as using visual representations before the text
so students can get a grasp of what will be discussed. As a collaborative activity students can
participate in Kahoot as part of a strategy to try to understand key vocabulary as pictures will be
displayed with the vocabulary word was the answer, as interpretive students can use their online
textbook to read to them aloud. As productive students can pair up with their partners and help
one another answer the chapter questions.
Part II:
One recommendation I feel is significant in a virtual learning environment is supporting
students’ social, emotional, and physical health and wellness. This is a crucial piece of
development for students and any child, especially during virtual times with schools it is
important to have students participate in social settings whether its break out rooms or talking to
the counselors via zoom for their emotions. I have seen teachers actually have office hours with
their students because the students just wanted someone there with them, not necessarily talk but
some students just need to know that someone is there for them. It is also a good idea for
teaching to have students participate in physical health over zooms like a stretching exercise or
silly dance the students will do to get them laughing and their sertraline levels up. Social,
emotional, and physical health is important in every aspect of any human being’s life.
