The Grade 6-12 standards for reading focus on the components of reading and include standards such as the Identification of Key Ideas and Details, Craft and Structure, and Integration of Knowledge and Ideas. The scaffolding of these standards is apparent throughout the Common Core Standards. For example, Section 2, Grade 6, of the Key Ideas and Details Standard is: Determine a central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments. For grade7, the standard is elevated to: Determine two or more central ideas in a text and analyze their development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text. For grade 8, the standard is further elevated to: Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including its relationship to supporting ideas; provide an objective summary of
the text (Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects, n.d.).
The Scarborough Reading Rope is made up of two large strands (sections): word recognition and
language comprehension. There are many smaller strands (subsections) within each section of the rope. When combined, the strand form what Scarborough calls “skilled reading”, which occurs when students are able to
read text fluently
while simultaneously comprehending it (Scarborough’s Reading Rope | Really Great Reading, n.d.). The Standards do not generally incorporate the Word Recognition aspects of Decoding, and Sight Recognition. They also do not incorporate the Language Comprehension aspect of Background Knowledge. I think this may be because there is really no practical way to assess and/or standardize these aspects.

One of the ELA Standards that I find significant is, “
Students apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate texts. They draw on their prior experience, their interactions with other readers and writers, their knowledge of word meaning and of other texts, their word identification strategies, and their understanding of textual features (e.g., sound-letter correspondence, sentence structure, context, graphics) (NCTE / IRA Standards for the English Language Arts - National Council of Teachers of English, n.d.). This standard coincides with the Reading Rope because having the ability to comprehend and interpret texts is part of having literacy knowledge and verbal reasoning which are part of the upper strands of the Reading Rope. Some of the ELA Standards for 7
th
grade are to be able to demonstrate command conventions of standard English grammar when speaking or writing, use knowledge of language and conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening, and to demonstrate the understanding of figurative language (Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts &Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects, n.d.).
