10 Personal Qualit Subject: 10 Personal Qualities Date: January 20, 2024 Project a Professional Image Successful: I take my professional dress and actions seriously. I can recall a time when I praised for my attention to detail in dressing for work. I was working at a local casino as a waitress. This can be a difficult job and often moral can be low. In fact, I did find this to be a difficult work in environment. However, I always made sure my uniform was ironed crisply. This resulted in part for me to receive a promotion at work Unsuccessful: I have always prided myself on proper work attire and crisp ironed clothing. However, professional image includes one’s actions. Unfortunate for me I sadly was once part of a group gossiping about another coworker. Done differently: what I should have done differently is not offered my thoughts and excused myself from the situation. Also, I learned from this experience that gossip in any form is not right before the Lord nor a part of who I want to be. Show your Human Side Successful : I find that showing your human side is often the easiest thing to do. Just this last week I reached out to a coworker to exchange phone numbers. My coworker is having surgery and will be out of work for the next twelve weeks. I plan on checking in on her from time to time. Unsuccessful : while I love people at times, I still find it hard to always connect. I recall a time I was going through a divorce and found myself sulking in grief. Grief can have the ability to shut us down from the outside world and cause us to become self-absorbed. It was with this state of mind that I missed an opportunity to be a good coworker. The task at work was to present our schools curriculum to an international panel of educators. My task was to prepare all the slides and set things up for the presentation. My colleague would then deliver the presentation. I prepared the slides and had everything set up and ready to present. However, my colleague was not feeling well and asked me to present. I did not respond to the emails or texts to assist her. This left her to present to the panel not feeling well. Done differently: I wish now that I would have helped my coworker and presented for her. In fact, there are a few things I could have done differently. One, I could have come out of my shell and presented. Instead of being afraid of crying in front of the panel. Two, I could of offered to helped my coworker with some tea and honey for her sore throat. Next, I should of at least reasoned to her messages. Finally, I could of relied on the Lord more to assist me. Project a Pleasant Personality Successful: I have been able to be successful with speaking professional and courteous to my coworker at my new job. This last week I found myself surprised with how kind I was with a cranky coworker. The situation is as follows: I am a substitute teacher full time. My current job is to fill in when teachers are receiving their trainings. This last week I went into a classroom as planned by the office staff. However, the teacher was not expecting me I get this happens sometimes. Instead of the teacher taking a depth breath and a moment to my unexpected presence she became unhinged. The teacher began screaming and cursing me out in front of staff and students. I was shocked and speechless. I know that in my past I would have responded back
with anger. Instead, I smiled and said your right and left the room. However, of course the teacher soon found out I was right. Although, she did not apologize I went on with my day. Unsuccessful: while last week I was able to maintain my composer under unfair circumstances this has not always been true. Once when I was working in customer service and having a particularly bad day, I became snippy with a client. I was working I hotel reservations and the hotel had over booked. There where a lot of disgruntled customers. The task I was given was to reassign the guests to neighboring hotels. Many of the guests were upset but understanding. However, one guest became exceedingly difficult, and I did respond unkindly to her. I would say that my unkind words did not help her with a already difficult situation. Done Differently: They say hindsight is 20/20 and this situation of my lack of customer services is just that . In inside sight I should of takin in account that the lady was traveling with three small children by herself. My hotel was sending her on a shuttle to another location less then five stars and an hour away. I her view I was the one standing in her way of getting the children down and her down for the good night’s sleep. I know now I should have had a more compassionate point of view and been more patient ant kind. Display Honesty and Integrity Successful: I find that being honest and having integrity is often an easy thing to do and an event from last year comes to mind to share. I was working for a private language school teaching English. I was commissioned to teach two private students. My boss did not keep track of the time sheet, so this was left up to me. I always made sure that I keep precise records so there would not be any misunderstanding. Unsuccessful: being a member of the church I now find it easy to be honest at the workplace. However, this has not always been the case. I recall a time working in restaurant that I would stay after hours with my coworkers. We would wine and dine on the company dime. Done differently : what I could of done differently in this situation would have been to either not partake or make sure my meals were paid for. Exhibit Self-Management: Successful: I always make sure that I ready for work. I have a few private students I tutor. I hear stories all the time from my students of teachers not showing up on time or being prepared to tutor. I always reach out during the week with extra fun work and check in to see how my students are. This work ethic has helped keep me in business with most of my clients being sent as referrals. Unsuccessful: while I have mastered the ability to reach out and connect with my students I have not always been organized. One example of this is not properly managing my time. This is something that I am continuing to work on. Done differently: There are few things I think I should do differently. One, I should make a better schedule for myself. Two, I should set goals. Finally, I should use the calendrer on my phone. Be Sociable Successful: I find being an introvert being sociable can be a challenge. However, I have been working on being friendlier. I have been working on saying hello to everyone and complementing at least five people a day. I find that this is making a difference in my personal happiness of how I see myself and others throughout the day.
Unsuccessful: I can think of plenty of times I have not responded to others social cues. One, example is not smiling back when others smile at me. Another example would be just not being friendly towards others. I think that when we go through hard things it is unimaginable that others could understand. Done differently: However, shutting down and not letting others in only hurts us in the long run. In fact, I believe that the devil is happy when we shut the world out. I think I could have seen that others cared about me and wanted to help me. I now know that building walls around us only hurts us not protects us. Develop Positive Self Esteem Successful: I add value to my workplace when I reach out and help others. An example of this: last month my substitute teacher team went to a school. The team was to work in kindergarten. This resulted in all the kinder teachers being out. On this day the kinder classes were to have a on campus field trip. I assisted in helping the others substitute teachers maneuver the administrations expectations of our team. Upon taking a more leadership role I was able to communicate expectations from the school administration. Unsuccessful: While in this circumstance I was able to show self confidence this has not always been true. I am not always self-confident. One situation comes to mind when I worked at another school. This school expectations were to assist in the autism room. While I do have some experience with autism this day, I felt completely uncomfortable. I was asked to assist in a room with twelve students with special needs. The situation I found myself in were one child on top of a desk, another child rolled up in a carpet, one child needing changed, another child locked in the bathroom, and the reminding children running around. I was completely at a loss of what to do. I was not positive, comfortable, happy, or full of self-esteem. Done differently: In hindsight I would have called the office first thing asking for backup . Then I would have jumped in and tried to assist much faster. Next, if the admin did not respond I would have taken notes of all the situation and reported if necessary. Be a Self-Starter Successful: I find that being a self-starter can be easy and is often expected from employers. An example of me being a self-starter is extending lesson plans without assistance. There are often times when the teacher does not leave enough work for the students. Therefore, I extend the lessons by adding on topic content. Unsuccessful: While I often pride myself on being a self-starter this has not always been the case. I once worked on a cruise ship as a bartender. I was young and asked more questions than I should of. I recall one day we had a large wedding party of 200 people on board. The bride and groom had selected custom drinks. I was young and inexperienced as a result I was not prepared. Instead of asking for help or looking up the proper mixology for the drinks I poured several drinks based on what I thought would be correct. However, I was soon informed that the drinks where not mixed correctly. This resulted in the wedding party receiving a small discount and new drinks.

Done differently: I should have asked my manager for the proper mixology portions for the drinks being served. Also, I should have arrived to work early to make sure everything was in order and I was fully prepared for my first big party. Be Dependable Successful: Being a substitute teacher I am often given a schedule to follow throughout the day. This schedule may include me rotating among several rooms throughout the day. Therefore, being dependable and accountable is important. In fact, last month I attend a school with my subsite teacher team there were 8 of us at one school. We had an extremely easy workload for the day. However, some of my colleagues did not rotate through to all the rooms on the list. Instead, some of my colleagues took advantage of the fact the office manger schedule was not clear. However, I did not follow my coworker’s example. This resulted in me being the only substitute on time and where I was needed throughout the day. Unsuccessful: While I take pride in remembering this day, I have not always been dependable. In fact, a few months ago I was running late for work. Instead of calling I assumed that everyone knew about the freeway shut down and it would be okay. Done differently: what I should have done differently was called to confirm with the school office manager I would be 15 minutes late for work. Be Responsible Successful: When I worked in reservations, I was considered very responsible. In fact, I once won employee of the month because of my reptation. I was known for always making my quotas in sales and finishing paperwork on time. Unsuccessful: However, I do recall a time when I became annoyed at how much work I completed compared to my coworkers. This caused at one time to slow down on my work resulting in tasks taking longer. Done differently: I should have taken a much-needed vacation instead of saving my time. A vacation would have helped me to recharge and come back to work with a new outlook.
