M. S. Corey, G. Corey, and C. Corey (2010) stated that culture “encompasses the beliefs and behaviors shared by a group of people,” but that it also includes “age, gender, sexual identity, religion, or socioeconomic status” (p. 17). Your culture influences your behavior as a group leader and the interpersonal relationships among the group members in any group you might lead. Acquiring multicultural competencies, which includes becoming aware of your personal world view and developing strategies and techniques for interacting with diverse populations, is essential to your effectiveness as a group leader. Your leadership style also influences how you lead groups. You may possess characteristics necessary for effective group leadership such as the ability to listen actively or to empathize. On the other hand, you may possess characteristics that are likely to challenge your effectiveness as a group leader. For this Discussion, consider characteristics you have that might make you an effective group leader and characteristics that might challenge your effectiveness. As you consider your emerging leadership style, consider how culture might impact it. With these thoughts in mind: Post by Day 3 a description of two characteristics you possess that might help make you an effective group leader and two characteristics you possess that may challenge your effectiveness as a group leader. Finally, briefly explain the potential impact culture might have on your emerging leadership style. Be specific and use the Learning Resources to support your response.
