The movement of Black Lives Matter Briefly identify and explain your selected topic and why you find it interesting.
Black Lives Matter
(BLM) is a social justice movement, established by
activists Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi, that began in 2013 but garnered worldwide attention in 2014 when the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter went viral. The hashtag was used to organize protests in Ferguson, Missouri, and New York City after the killings of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, who were unarmed
black men. By White police officers Darren Wilson and Daniel Pantaleo, respectively, in those two cities brought the issue of police brutality to the forefront of a national debate on race relations. The movement, which has been described by some supporters as
a resurgence of American civil rights activism, seeks to end police brutality and to inspire a national debate on institutionalized racism within the US justice system.
Summarize the opposing viewpoints outlined in the Points of View essays (Point and
Counterpoint).
The points of view for the Black Live Matters movement, is that African Americans are more likely to be profiled as criminals then white Americans. Police is more likely to use deadly force when confronting a black suspect. The justice system blacks are more likely to receive a much longer sentences commented the same crime as someone white defendant. As for the points of counter points, black live matter movement was started to say black lives are more valuable than any other race. Black communities have more violence which put officers in a higher risk of danger. Reaches shows that police shootings that involve a white suspect’s is more likely than black suspects. Statistics show black people are killed by other black people more than an officer involved shooting that involves a black suspect.
