Heggerty curriculum
https://youtu.be/5CWILLYWxUw
Developed by Dr. Michael Heggerty in the year 2003, the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum is basically a thirty-five-week program of daily lesson plans that offer
a high-level of explicit modelling and leaner engagement. Based on research, each level of the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum mainly focuses on 8 phonemic awareness skills, along with two additional activities in an attempt to develop sound and letter recognition, and language awareness. The Heggerty curriculum encompasses instruction in the following phonemic and phonological awareness skills: Blending, onset fluency, rhyming, segmenting, deleting, substituting and adding phonemes among others. The most interesting aspect of this strategy that I found fascinating is the level of leaner engagement. I must admit that when I was first introduced to the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness curriculum, I was a bit skeptical with it. I heard about it at a conference, and decided to purchases one for my own classroom. The level of student engagement for this strategy is absolutely significant. However, until an educator develops a routine for using it that keeps their class engaged, it can be difficult to implement.

st
graders using the blending and segmentation, an instructional practice in the K-2 reading foundation skills block that assists them comprehend sound-letter combinations and how that helps them spell and read words. Leaners first tap out the sounds in a word on their fingers, then blend the sound together then review what each sound feels and looks like in the mouth. Finally, they analyze the auditory and oral connections in the word they began with.

For the effect aspect of this strategy is the fact that kids who are able to segment and blend sounds easily are able to utilize this knowledge when spelling and reading. Although segmenting and blending individual sounds can be a bit difficult for kids at the beginning, but
once these kids get the hang of it hey are actually unstoppable.

P
honemic awareness using Elkonin boxes
https://youtu.be/ToEfvnorvd8
Elkonin boxes build phonological awareness skills by segmenting words into individual phonemes or sounds. To use Elkonin boxes, children listen to words and move a token of the word into a box for each phoneme or sound. In some cases, distinct colored tokens may be utilized for vowels and consonants or just for each phoneme in the word.
What’s fascinating is that Elkonin boxes are an effective multisensory strategy that builds and strengthens phonological awareness. It is among the favorite reading strategy to aid struggling readers with blending and suggesting. It is ne of the best dyslexia interventions for phonics and decoding that all leaners can use.
