Heggerty curriculum

Developed by Dr. Michael Heggerty in the year 2003, the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum is basically a thirty-five-week program of daily lesson plans that offer
a high-level of explicit modelling and leaner engagement. Based on research, each level of the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum mainly focuses on 8 phonemic awareness skills, along with two additional activities in an attempt to develop sound and letter recognition, and language awareness. The Heggerty curriculum encompasses instruction in the following phonemic and phonological awareness skills: Blending, onset fluency, rhyming, segmenting, deleting, substituting and adding phonemes among others. The most interesting aspect of this strategy that I found fascinating is the level of leaner engagement. I must admit that when I was first introduced to the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness curriculum, I was a bit skeptical with it. I heard about it at a conference, and decided to purchases one for my own classroom. The level of student engagement for this strategy is absolutely significant. However, until an educator develops a routine for using it that keeps their class engaged, it can be difficult to implement.

graders using the blending and segmentation, an instructional practice in the K-2 reading foundation skills block that assists them comprehend sound-letter combinations and how that helps them spell and read words. Leaners first tap out the sounds in a word on their fingers, then blend the sound together then review what each sound feels and looks like in the mouth. Finally, they analyze the auditory and oral connections in the word they began with.
