Social Media Causes and Effect Essay
Social media usage has become a prevalent part of contemporary life. Recently, it has
become increasingly challenging to communicate with individuals not using any social media
platform. Social media platforms such as TikTok, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook
have significantly changed how people connect with others and share information. As the usage
of social media increases, there have been concerns regarding how it affects society. This essay
explores the positive and negative causes and effects of social media.
One of social media's most significant positive effects is its ability to connect people from
all parts of the world. This ability has changed how individuals interact and communicate with
each other. People worldwide can now maintain contact with loved ones despite their
geographical location. Moreover, social media usage has helped businesses connect with their
customers. Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are significant
marketing tools as they allow businesses to share information about their products and services,
run promotional campaigns and advertisements, and give their customers feedback in a more
personal and engaging way. Additionally, social media also enables individuals to connect with
people who share their passions or interests. For instance, a person interested in a particular skill,
such as an artist, may use social media to connect with other artists, regardless of location. Social
media has become an essential aspect of communication and connection in society.
Another positive effect caused by social media is the ability to spread information and
raise awareness. Due to its easy accessibility, social media can easily disseminate news and
information. This quality makes it an essential tool for activism and advocacy (Siddiqui & Singh,
2016). One example of social media's power in activism is the Black Lives Matter movement.

experienced by people of color. The spread of information about this movement started a global
conversation and reaction, with many people from different countries worldwide participating in
advocating for change. Moreover, social media has been used to spread information and raise
awareness regarding vital issues such as global change and mental health awareness. Social
media platforms like YouTube and Instagram have also helped to spread tips, advice, and support
regarding nutrition and fitness. This dissemination of knowledge has enabled people to access
information, raise awareness, and drive for advocacy.
However, despite social media's positive impact, it has various negative effects. One of
social media's most notable negative consequences is its impact on mental health. Research
indicates a link between social media use and increased rates of low self-esteem, anxiety, and
depression (Gündüz, 2017). The unrealistic portrayals of self-presentation, body image, and life
on social media platforms can direly affect mental health. Individuals may experience self-doubt,
insecurity, and inadequacy due to the set unrealistic standards for personal achievements, beauty,
and lifestyles shown on social media (Gündüz, 2017). Moreover, social media can make one feel
lonely and isolated if they compare themselves to others on social media ad feel like they are
missing out. Comparing their lives to others' standards and picture-perfect lives portrayed on
social media can make people feel unfulfilled and left out.
Social media also contributes to the spread of fake news and misinformation. The role of
social media in disseminating fake news and misinformation is a prevalent issue raising concerns
in the contemporary world. Social media may contribute to the spread of inaccurate or
exaggerated information. Social media algorithms normally prioritize information with more
shares and higher engagement, meaning that although the information is false, it can still easily
spread on social media (Siddiqui & Singh, 2016). The spread of false information, especially

regarding topics like politics or public health, can have adverse results. For instance, political
misinformation may be damaging as it can influence elections and public opinion on a political
issue.
Overall, social media is vital in providing information, raising awareness, and connecting
people. Social media can help people to advocate for change in society. However, social media
can also negatively affect mental health and contribute to the spread of fake news and
misinformation. Despite the negative effects of social media, its positive impact on society is
more significant as it has enabled people to communicate, connect, and create positive change.
