The governor is about to announce that a major company is opening a new factory in your state, providing jobs for 500 people. What would be the best way to make the announcement—through a tweet to the governor’s Twitter followers, along with a news release sent out at the same time? Through a press conference? Through a media event at the unemployment office? Develop a media plan for the governor. Social Media Announcement Craft a compelling tweet: Utilize the governor's Twitter account to share the exciting news about the factory opening. The tweet should be concise, informative and engaging, highlighting the number of jobs created and the positive economic impact on the state. Press Release Prepare a comprehensive press release: Simultaneously with the tweet, issue a detailed press release providing in depth information about the company, the factory location, the job opportunities and the anticipated economic benefits. The release should also include quotes from the governor, company representatives and local officials expressing their enthusiasm for the project. Media Event Organize a strategic media event: Schedule a press conference at the governor's office or the future factory site to formally announce the development. Invite reputable media outlets including local and national news organizations, to cover the event. Unemployment Office Media Event Host a media event at the unemployment office: To emphasize the positive impact on employment consider hosting a separate media event at a local unemployment office. The governor can personally meet with job seekers and highlight the new employment opportunities created by the factory opening. Additional Considerations Visuals: Incorporate compelling visuals like photos of the factory site, company logos and maps indicating the location to enhance the announcements. They can include speeches by members of Congress, commemorative ceremonies, and events that highlight particular issues or causes and are typically covered by news outlets because they reflect the values and priorities of Congress and the American people. Why does the Supreme Court generally receive less media coverage than other branches of government? Attach your Chapter 20, Lesson 1 Video Worksheet – Infamous Scribblers 1. Explaining. What was George Washington’s relationship to the press and his connection to news leaks? George Washington had a complex relationship with the press. He was often critical of the press, believing that they were too negative and unfair to him. He even called them "infamous scribblers." However he also used the press to his advantage leaking information to them in order to control the narrative. He was one of the first presidents to use news leaks as a political tool. 2. Describing. What did Thomas Jefferson do while he was Secretary of State, and why did he take those actions? While he was Secretary of State, Thomas Jefferson misappropriated State Department funds to start a newspaper that vilified the Washington administration. He also leaked confidential information to the press in order to undermine the administration. He did these things because he was opposed to Washington's philosophy of government. 3. Summarizing. According to the author, what were Benjamin Franklin’s contributions to journalism? Benjamin Franklin made several contributions to journalism. He expanded the definition of journalism to include science and experimentation. He also invented the journalistic hoax using a fake story about a prostitute named Polly Baker to make a point about hypocrisy. 4. Making Connections. Do you see any parallels between the events the author describes and the relationship between politicians and the media today? Explain your answer. Yes, there are several parallels between the events the author describes and the relationship between politicians and the media today. Just as politicians in the past used the press to their advantage and leaked information to control the narrative, politicians today do the same thing. They also use the press to attack their opponents and shape public opinion. Just as there were
unethical journalists in the past who spread misinformation and lies there are unethical journalists today who do the same thing.
