With nonfiction reading, there is often a lot of new vocabulary or terminology students will encounter. Brainstorm and describe at least two ways you can “prep” students for new vocabulary before they read a nonfiction piece. Why do you believe these strategies will be effective? Einstein (2003), mentioned that modeling enthusiasm & appreciation for reading motivates students to enjoy reading & developing students' literacy horizons (p. 1). When a teacher is well prepared, it engages students in discussions. The KWL Chart was developed by Donna Ogle, it is made of three three-column charts, which students can fill up before reading the nonfiction piece, and evaluate after the completion of the text. This chart develops the critical thinking of learners of students, where you can share the vocabulary words, and they fill up the chart where K-What do I know? W- What do I want to know? L- What have I learned? As they start reading they can be able to identify the words, get the meaning, and make corrections of what they read and what they thought it meant, but they can connect the prior knowledge to the new vocabulary words, and make sentences understanding their meaning. KWL Chart identifies misconceptions of the words students prove to know and enables them to correct them at the end, but it gives space for teachers to identify the prior knowledge of their students in building their literacy (Wray, 2005, p.44). This strategy sets a purpose for reading, encourages learners to find answers to their questions, and clarifies what they know and do not know (Weebly, n.d.). Word matching games. My students enjoy games, it brings a different atmosphere in the learning environment. In this game, students are paired up or join a small group, and use the cards (with images, and meaning), to discuss and match them. In the discussion, they learn, challenge each other, and build their social skills in agreement with the answers proposed. This will be very helpful in preparing them to be curious and longing to learn the meaning of the words at their completion. You gain their focus & interest, and mostly it comes as a competition towards others and themselves. It should be monitored. This strategy is helpful, students can engage freely and without pressure in a playful way (Ertola, 2022). For example, refute, evidence, claim, and argument can be represented in a person’s action, and those words are written on other cards to match.
