Qudsia Malik Website Analysis Draft COM 313 Professor Apatoff September 25, 2023 https://www.njit.edu/academics/major/civil-engineering Introduction: What makes a bad school website is that there is too much all over the place, too much color, too many links. There is no structure or order of the pages, there are pictures flying all around the page. You are unable to navigate anything and you can not find the correct links or the correct information that you are trying to find, you can find everything but what you are looking for. There is no information about people who you can reach out to for specific things and if there are, you have to go on a scavenger hunt and even if they are in plain sight, it is a personal email instead of a business or formal email. Sometimes, things do not load well, sometimes things are taken down and you get an error message: “404: sorry page not found.” Information is archived and unavailable to students sometimes. Some university or high school webpages require a specific browser to work. Occasionally, the background is too bright and substantial that you can not see the words on the page itself. PART 1: The New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Civil Engineering page is intended for prospective students and parents to get a better understanding of the program at the university.
This website explains the definition of civil engineering, the starting salaries, what the engineers do, job titles, and the top employers who choose students from NJIT to work for them. The website prides itself on being the second best civil engineering college in the United States. The website states the definition as “Civil Engineering is the fusion of engineering, design and aesthetics. Civil Engineers call upon science and engineering principles to plan, design, construct, and maintain infrastructure such as buildings, roads, highways, tunnels, bridges, rail systems, airports, seaports, water reservoirs, as well as storm water drainage and control plants” ( https://www.njit.edu/academics/major/civil-engineering ). According to the website, civil engineers are problem solvers and they have the best interest of the public at heart. A civil engineer is someone who helps build important things like bridges and provides clean water for communities. They do a lot of investigating and analyzing to make sure everything is safe and will work well. They also talk to the people who live in the community to make sure they are happy with the plans. They use computers to make detailed drawings and predictions. When the project starts, the civil engineer makes sure everything is going as planned and that it stays on budget and finishes on time. This website is well focused on one topic but it is not very organized and the pictures provided can definitely be changed. The group in the picture does not seem very engaged, in fact, they look like they dislike each other and they are bored. The author wrote this in sophisticated language to get their point across but in a way that is indirect. The audience are the prospective students and parents but the website lacks key elements that they look for. They look for who the right people to contact are for further information and this particular website does not give any links to that information. It gives links to the specific Bachelor’s of Science degrees offered that you may choose from. There is a section where you can read about the alumni’s stories and some
of their favorite things about the program at the university and then provides another link to all of the majors and minors offered at the university. The tone of this webpage is inviting and respectful. Part 2: Civil engineers are people who help solve problems in our communities. They work on things like planning neighborhoods, making sure we have clean water, building strong structures, reducing traffic, finding ways to use energy better, and improving our roads and bridges. They use special tools like computers to help them do their work. It's important for them to think about what people need, how much things cost, and how to keep everyone safe. Civil engineers are professionals who help design and build things like roads, bridges, and buildings. They can work for different companies or government agencies. Some civil engineers help with planning and designing, while others work on construction sites. They can also manage projects and make sure everything is going smoothly. A civil engineer is someone who helps build things like roads, bridges, and buildings. They start by figuring out what people need and then they look at different places to see where it would be best to build. They also test the soil and rocks to make sure it's safe to build there. They talk to the people who live in the area to see what they think. Once they have all the information, they come up with a plan and use computers to make detailed drawings. They also make predictions about how the project will affect the environment. Civil engineers can also work for the government to help with things like transportation and protecting the environment. When the construction starts, the civil engineer is there to make sure everything is going as planned. They make sure the workers have what they need and that the project is finished on time and within the budget.

After studying civil engineering, some people may choose to continue their education and get a master's or doctorate degree in related fields. Others may decide to study business, management, or law. In this curriculum, students will learn about civil engineering. They will take math and science courses to build a strong foundation. In the junior and senior years, they will learn about engineering science and design. The program also includes computer work and hands-on laboratory courses. The senior year will end with a special design project. Upon graduation, many companies such as Mott MacDonald, NJ Transit and PSE&G are looking to hire students from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. There are a plethora of companies you may choose from and a couple of common job titles you can choose from based on what you are interested in. Some of these include being an AutoCad drafter, structural engineer, geotechnical engineer, surveyor, or a project manager. The starting salary for a civil engineer who has graduated from this university is $58,430 annually and this number only goes up with the more experience you have. This university is the second best in civil engineering in the nation. Part 3: My personal perspective as a CE student was my main reason for choosing to analyze this particular website. I looked at it as if I was a prospective student and I thought this entire website can be changed. I thought to add the links to important people, important dates, and upcoming events at the New Jersey Institute of Technology for prospective students as well as parents, if they are interested.
