The diagram gave me insight that my friend sees me as a wise, confident, caring, and
dependable person. It also shows me that I am strong, calm, accepting, and brave. I have always
thought of myself as a person who is observant but shy on the inside. From the open quadrant to
the blind quadrant, it wasn’t much of a difference just the words used to describe how I
communicate with my friend.
I agree with the guidelines in the textbook for enriching the self toward maintaining a
healthy identity. Making a firm commitment to personal growth takes energy and effort and is
something that has to be worked towards every day. We should also gain and use knowledge and
because the knowledge we gain should be used and put towards maintaining our healthy identity.
The second guideline is to self-disclose when appropriate. We shouldn’t reveal information about
ourselves unless it is appropriate. We should set goals that are realistic and fair so that we can
accomplish them. This is an important guideline because when setting goals, we shouldn’t set
ones that we know are impossible to accomplish. That will result in the feeling of being a failure
and the end result would not be maintaining a healthy identity.
One goal that I have written to improve my self-concept is to not second guess my
decisions. I am constantly second-guessing my decisions and changing my mind because I am
unsure of myself. I need to learn to have the confidence in myself that I have in others. The self-
doubt can be exhausting but I know I need to work on getting past this every day and that things
will not just change overnight.
When the topic of personal identity is brought up in conversation it can be a hard one to
discuss. We should be comfortable with talking about this with those we have close personal
relationships with. This should be something that we can talk about together without getting
upset or hurt. Taking mental notes and having the want and encouragement to work to become
the best version of ourselves. Everyone deserves to be that version of themselves, and we should
encourage each other instead of tear each other down.
