. For this discussion, consider the readings for the week, and
reflect on whether you think you are an ethical leader. What makes a
leader more ethical than others? How important is a strong culture of
ethics for an organization? State your rationale. Are you relationship-
focused or are you production-focused? Is one approach better than the
other? Why?
Guided Response
: Respond to at least two of your classmates by
commenting on their posts. Though two replies are the basic expectation
for the introduction discussion, for deeper engagement and learning, you
are encouraged to provide responses to any comments or questions
others have given to you. Remember, continuing to engage with peers
and the instructor will further the conversation and provide you with
opportunities to demonstrate your content expertise, critical thinking, and
real-world experiences with this topic. Continue to monitor the discussion
forum until Day 7 and respond to anyone who replies to your post.
I do believe I am an ethical leader. I actively work to be unbiased and
inclusive. I lead by example of how I feel myself and others should be
treated, with respect. I actively listen and take other’s opinions, views,
and knowledge into account and know that I am not always the correct
person for an assignment or the most knowledgeable. I ask for 360
feedback on a regular basis to identify areas of opportunity for learning
and growth. I do not try to influence others in a negative way. When
leading others to follow in ways that are negative or knowingly wrong
directions is unethical leadership and can have negative implications for
the employees who follow as well as the company (Baack, 2017).
There are specific traits defined as being an ethical leader such as leading
by example, willingness for growth and learning, respecting all employees
equally, having open communication, manages stress properly, and has
the ability to mediate impartially (Western Governors University, 2020).
What makes one leader more ethical than others is someone who always
does the right thing, regardless of being liked, unethical direction, or bad
influence from others. A strong company culture will influence employee’s
decisions and choices by promoting ethical culture and setting proper
goals, missions, values, and strategies. Culture is also influence by
provided company training and strong ethical leaders at the top setting
examples for others.
While I do value production and strive for high output, I do feel that I lean
more on the relationship side. Through relationship building I have built
increased commitment to the team and company, expanded resources
and knowledge connections, and open communication. These blocks have
created higher productivity through that commitment and influence. I
prefer this method I think it creates longer lasting relationships and
commitment which lead to longer tenure and increased knowledge. I do
know that there are projects, goals, or situations that do not require
relationship building, but having this skill can be used in other work
situations as well as personal. These relationships can play a big role in
future opportunities and successes.
