Identifying Visual Techniques in
Images
1.1, 1.2, 1.3
I feel quite confident about my
ability
to
identify
visual
techniques
in
images.
In
assignments like "The Lottery"
and
"The
Moustache,"
I
was
able
to
recognize
visual
techniques
such
as
'symbolism.'
For
example,
in
"The
Lottery,"
I
successfully
identified
how symbolism was
used
to
represent
tradition.
Similarly, in "The Moustache," I
noticed the clever use of visual
symbols
to
convey
deeper
meanings within the text.
My
marker
noted
that
I
demonstrated
a
good
understanding of the sequence
of events in "The Lottery." He
encouraged
me
to
read
"The
Moustache" more carefully and
perhaps make annotations as I
read. He mentioned that while I
had some solid observations, I
should develop them further. To
enhance
my
work,
she

incorporating
more
supporting details and quotes to

Explaining the Effect Visual

Visual Texts
Explaining the impact of visual
techniques on an image is a bit
of a challenge for me. While I
can
identify
the
techniques
used, understanding why they
were employed and how they
affect the image's message is
not always clear to me. I can
grasp
what
an
image
should
make
me
feel
or
think, but I
My
teacher
agreed
with
my
thoughts about this skill, noting
my ability to identify techniques
accurately
but
suggesting
improvements in explaining their
impact. To assist me in this, He
recommended starting with an
overall
description
of
the
image's mood and a statement
summarizing its message. Then,
need to work on explaining how
each
technique
contributes
to
that.
I should delve into how I arrived
at
that
mood
and
message,
considering the specific details
in the image. This approach will
help me better understand and
explain
the
effects
of
each
technique.

Identifying Poetic Techniques/Figures
of Speech in Poems
1.4
I
find
identifying
poetic
techniques
and
figures
of
speech in poems to be a bit of a
challenge. While I can recognize
some,
like
similes
and
metaphors, I struggle to identify
and understand more complex
techniques. For instance, when I
see a metaphor, I can point it
out, but I often find it difficult to
explain why the poet chose that
metaphor or what it contributes
to the poem's meaning.
My
marker provided feedback
indicating
that
I
have
some
room
for
improvement
in
this
skill. He suggested that I could
enhance
my
understanding
of
poetic devices and their effects.
His feedback encouraged me to
work
on
providing
more
in-depth and clear explanations
of the techniques I identify in
poems.

Explaining
how
poetic
techniques affect poems is an
area
where
I
face
some
difficulties.
I
can
spot
the
techniques, but articulating their
impact
on
the
poem's overall
message is a struggle. It's like
knowing
the
ingredients
in
a
recipe
but
not
being
able
to
explain how they create the final
flavor.
My marker echoed my feelings
about this skill, indicating that
my ability to explain the effects
of poetic techniques on poems
needs improvement. He advised
me to work on providing clearer
and more detailed explanations,
using
direct
quotes
from
the
poem to support my points. His
feedback
emphasized
the
importance
of
connecting
the
techniques
to
the
poem's
overarching message.

Future Goals
Based on your self-reflection above, what three skills you would like to strengthen as you continue in the course?
1.I want to become more proficient in identifying and explaining various poetic devices within poems, showcasing how these devices
contribute to the poet's intended message.
2.I aim to elevate my story writing skills by developing more engaging narratives, creating well-defined characters, and effectively
incorporating literary techniques to capture the reader's imagination.
3.I plan to work on providing a more profound understanding of the themes in poems, connecting personal experiences and insights to
the poet's message.
