CIVL 320 W2022 (S. Soleimani-D) Assignment No. 4 Page 1 of 2 1. Using a properly labeled flowchart, illustrate the steps involved in cement production; you may include brief descriptions for the steps in point form, if need be. 2. It was discussed in class that “5 percent of voids can lower the strength of concrete by as much as 30 percent”. Elaborate on this statement using the graph below. 3. If a capillary void was the same size as a golf ball, approximately how big would an entrapped air void be? Make a comparison. 4. Why does chemical shrinkage occur? Explain the difference between chemical and autogenous shrinkage.
CIVL 320 W2022 (S. Soleimani-D) Assignment No. 4 Page 2 of 2 5. In fresh concrete, a thin layer of excess water is forced to the surface of the cast concrete. a. What is this phenomenon called? b. What causes it to occur? c. What are the potential implications or consequences? d. How it can be controlled or mitigated? 6. Is it possible to have two different concrete mixes with the same slump values but different workabilities? Briefly explain your answer. 7. Explain why waterproofing admixtures are often used in concrete mixes for building water distribution channels, although the concrete surface inside the channel is to be treated with a waterproof polymer-based coating after the concrete is hardened. Hint: waterproofing coatings or membranes are considered surface treatments. 8. You are hired as the materials consultant engineer for a concrete pedestrian bridge to be built over a highway in Northern British Columbia. The construction is happening in November, when there are only a few days with short time periods that ambient temperature would be above 5 degrees Celsius. Provide your technical comments and suggestions on the following: a. List three different ways or methods that can increase the rate of concrete strength gain by increasing the hydration rate b. Why is selecting an appropriate W/CM ratio is important in such project c. Suggest one chemical admixture to be considered for the concrete mix design and explain your reasoning behind your selection d. Suggest one mineral admixture or Supplementary Cementitious Material (SCM) to be used in the mix design and explain why you are recommending it e. Provide at least one technical construction advice for this cold weather concreting practice
