1 Before you start, copy and paste the material below to the same file in Part 1. Precision – Throughout this research, there is a lack of precision by not including the specific type and brand of anti-bacterial and bacterial soap. The specific size of the hospitals could also be used. Breadth – There is a lack of breadth as he does not take different viewpoints to come up with a solution. He should not assume that anti-bacterial soap is the only factor that affects the spread of multi-drug-resistant bacteria. Contribution to the Domain – Contribution to the domain can be used to help come up with a unique idea and solution that is not already in place. 1. Based on your critiques, you decided to change the hypothesis to “Removal of anti- bacterial soap from hospitals would reduce the incidence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria”. Design an appropriate experiment to test this hypothesis. 2. Hypothesis: The use of anti-bacterial soap is causing a rise in multi-drug resistant strains of bacteria to be found in hospitals. New Hypothesis: Make a list of states 1-50, then use a random number generator 20 times to get 20 different states. This will create a sample size of 20/50 states. Next, randomly pick a region in each state and then sample all the hospitals within this region. Next, we can test out various brands of anti-bacterial soap. Then we can conclude our data by putting the top 5 best quality brands against the lowest quality 5 brands of anti-bacterial soap and non-anti-bacterial soap. We can get a sample of bacteria from various settings in the hospital as surfaces, equipment, bathrooms, walls, beds, floors, and other areas. Afterwards, using petri dishes we can swab the bacteria and test it. Next, we can test the different soaps on the petri dishes that have bacteria on them. We will give the petri dishes a month of time to sit with weekly checks in between on the amount of bacteria collected.
2 Post-class Reflection 3. After In-class Activity #1, which intellectual standard(s) is/are most important as a scientist and why? Which intellectual standard(s) do you need the most improvement? And how do you plan to do that? (At least 200 words total; Please indicate the word count at the end of your answer.) After the In-class Activity #1, I believe as a scientist you need to ensure you demonstrate precision. Precision is a large component when dealing with a new creation. For example, if a scientist is trying to find a new cure to cancer, they must be as precise as possible. Another important standard that would be needed is logic. Logic would need to be provided to back-up a scientist’s hypothesis and/or experiment. I also believe that breadth should be considered as a scientist as you need to understand multiple different perspectives to solve a certain issue. Reflecting on myself after learning more of the intellectual standards, I believe I need to improve upon depth, breadth, and precision. Before this class, I had never heard of breadth, this term is new to me. I realized when dealing with thinking I do not picture more than one insight to a question. I also realized I lack depth in my thinking. I do not go more than the minimum when it comes to depth but I now believe I should! I also felt as if with precision, I struggled between precision, clarity, and accuracy. I often felt myself as getting confused between the 3. I believe I can plan to improve these areas in my thinking through going through every critical thinking topic and make sure I am thinking in more than just a single way. (word count- 232)
