MODULE 7 UNIT 1 new Assignment Part B 1. Classify the following substances, using Internet search : Category Non-electrolyte Butane, Benzene,Turpenttine, Glucose, Ethyl Alcohol Strong electrolyte Sodium Hydroxide, Potassium Bromide, Sulfuric acid, Hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, magnesium chloride Weak electrolyte Carbonic acid, phosphoric acid, ammonia, acetic acid, pyridine. Sulfuric acid, glucose, ethyl alcohol, sodium hydroxide, potassium bromide, benzene, butane, carbonic acid, phosphoric acid, hydrochloric acid, turpentine, ammonia, acetic acid, pyridine, nitric acid, magnesium chloride Total 16 marks 2. Indicate the solubility of the following solutes in 100 g of water, using the solubility curves chart below: a. potassium chloride at 90 °C – 55g / 100g water 1
b. cesium sulfate at 20 °C – 5 g / 100g water c. sodium nitrate at 10 °C - 80 g / 100 g water Total 3 marks 3. Calculate the mass of potassium dichromate, K 2 Cr 2 O 7 , which can dissolve in 50 g of water at 25°C and at 50°C. Show all calculations . 3 marks X = (12g)(50g)/100g = 6 g at 25°C X = (30g)(50g)/100g = 15g at 50° C 4. Use the solubility curves chart below . A saturated solution of potassium nitrate (KNO 3 ) is prepared at 60 o C using 100 g of water. How many grams of solute will precipitate out of solution if the temperature is suddenly cooled to 30 o C? 4 marks Show all calculations. 60°C = 100 g KNO 3 / 100 g H 2 O 30°C = 45 g KNO 3 / 100 g H 2 O 100 g – 45 g = 55 g 55 g KNO 3 precipitated. 2
