Shaw 1 When responding to calls that involves someone who is dealing with a mental illness, law enforcement officers are usually not prepared for the possibility of what they will encounter upon arrival. This is more likely the reason as to why officers are on high alert when responding to these calls. When officers respond to the scene that involves someone having a mental break, it is shown that this individual is armed with a knife (Saleh et al., 2018). Officers sometimes fail to de-escalate the situation and make a breakthrough with that individual, which ends with that person getting fatally shot (Saleh et al., 2018). In reference to a recent finding, 45-state study reported that persons diagnosed with a mental illness and on Medicaid was more than three times as likely as people in the general population to be killed by legal involvement such as death by police (Saleh et al., 2018). If police officers are going to continue responding to calls that involve mentally ill persons, then the police must learn how to use more than the normal rang of de- escalation tactics due to most having a hard time deciphering what is real and what is not. An officer’s most powerful weapon is the capability to collaborate successfully in efforts to de- escalate whatever situation is at hand (Harmening, 2014, p. 39). Once the situation has completely been de-escalated, without the use of force, the mentally ill individual should not be taken to jail but taken to get the psychological help that they are in need to minimize similar situations in the future.
