News Article Assignment 100 Points You will review a science news article that is associated with a recently published research article (articles to choose from are listed below). You need to answer the question listed below based on the information in the news article. If any of the answers are plagiarized, you will receive no credit on this assignment. News article reviews need to be upload in Canvas. Late assignments will initially be penalized 10% followed by an additional 10% deduction for each week it is late. Choose one of these articles: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2021/03/210301151553.htm https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2021/02/210222164144.htm https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/01/200122110447.htm Questions: 1) What is the citation for the news article? Cell Press. "Brewing a better espresso, with a shot of math." ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily, 22 January 2020. < www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/01/200122110447.htm >. 2) What is the citation for the journal article were the original research was reported? Michael I. Cameron, Dechen Morisco, Daniel Hofstetter, Erol Uman, Justin Wilkinson, Zachary C. Kennedy, Sean A. Fontenot, William T. Lee, Christopher H. Hendon, Jamie M. Foster. Systematically Improving Espresso: Insights from Mathematical Modeling and Experiment. Matter , 2020; DOI: 10.1016/j.matt.2019.12.019 3) What observation(s) led to the researchers conducting the study? Researchers observed that people in the coffee industry were using a fine-grind and too much coffee beans to create a flavor of bitterness and sour acidity. The fine grind exposed the brewing liquid which led to a boost extraction yield. Some of the ground coffee dissolves into the drink. Researchers created a mathematical model for the extraction yield and found out it was more complicated than they originally expected it to be. Fine grinding clogged the coffee bed, decreasing the extraction yield, waste raw material, and difference in taste by sampling grounds and missing others. 4) Write a hypothesis that could be associated with this research study. Using less coffee beans and grounding very little can will make the espresso coffee cheaper to make and have more consistent shots.
5) What is the research question that is being answered in this study? Is there a more efficient, simpilar, and cheaper method to making espresso coffee? 6) Explain the experimental design used in this study. The extraction yield depended on the pressure of the water flow through the mass of coffee grounds. Researchers realized they needed more computing power to solve the physics and equations of the brewing. The researchers used electrochemistry to figure out how caffeine and molecules dissolved out the coffee grounds. They also needed to see how the lithium ions move through electrodes of a battery. Researchers boost the extraction yield through more routes. 7) Summarize the results of this study. The results of the study indicate that the researcher’s experimental design will require fewer coffee beans per cup of beverage, thereby reducing costs and reducing waste in coffee supplies. Even though this is a great method to use to make espresso, there is no one clear way how every person wants their espresso made. A factor to consider is that not all people enjoy their coffee the same, and there are different ways people want their own espresso made. This experiment design causes some conflict but does have some upside with improving reproducibility.
