1 Bella Ronca Professor David Giesel CHEM-1010-N52 10 November 2023 Reflection Paper 6: Hydraulic Fracturing After researching hydraulic fracturing and fracking in general, I noticed how common it actually is. While in most places it is not a large export there is still potential for fracking in many unusual places. As far as where I live, Cleveland, TN, there is no current hydraulic fracturing going on, nor are there plans for it in the future. After some investigating, there were plans in the past and petitions held to start fracking within the Chattanooga area, not too far from Cleveland. Although now in present time this has not come into fruition nor is anybody still talking about doing this in the near future. There is a small fracking plant in Chattanooga, called Chattanooga Shale. This fracking rock is shallow, therefore they can continue to frack from this. They use compressed air which is beneficial unlike many other fracking methods because it does not produce hazardous water in the process. Personally, I think that fracking is a great tool tohelp our economy both locally and globally. After researching I noticed there are plenty more harmful aspects to it, than beneficial aspects though. I believe that fracking is beneficial as it lowers fuel prices and one article states it also lowers emissions. Although, where I live there are many waterways this includes major rivers, creeks, and lakes. Becuase of this I think that fracking is not good for the future of East Tennessee. There are too many habitats and people that can and may be harmed by the excess, hazardous water that comes with hydraulic fracturing. Another concept to take into consideration is the influx of greenhouse gases being
2 emitted all over the globe. Not only is our planet suffering from this from many different sources, but fracking is a main source of this. It is proven that hydraulic fracking produces large amounts of methane, which is a dangerously potent, and harmful greenhouse gas. In wrapping up, my opposition to introducing hydraulic fracking in our region is firmly grounded in environmental and climate concerns. Along with it aligning with chemical principles. The potential hazards linked to fracking, such as water contamination and methane emissions, emphasize the neeed of prioritizing cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions. Recognizing the complex chemistry of our local ecosystems and their delicate equilibrium, it's important to find and use eco-friendly alternatives. Upholding chemical responsibility means advocating for choices that not only defend our community but also contribute to the global battle against climate change. We can together strive for a future where chemistry supports a healthier and more sustainable planet.
