AB541: Concepts & Principles II Reading Check (5 pts) Unit 4 Student: Readings: Vaughan & Michael (1982) Palmer (1996) Instructions: Answer each question based on the assigned reading in your own words. The purpose of this is to think about the purpose of the reading, rather than to regurgitate a summary. Vaughan & Michael (1982) 1. Explain how automatic reinforcement is different from other forms of reinforcement. (0.5 points) Automatic reinforcement doesn’t require the input of another person, it happens natural under influences from either own behavior or the environment around us and is naturally inevitably strengthened. Other forms of reinforcements have input from the environment/ people and need to be reinforced by some sort of action or behavior of others/ environment. 2. Explain how the behavior of perceiving is automatic reinforcement. (1 point) With perceiving, the ability to be able to see is automatically reinforcing because once an object that is liked is seen or some version of it, the looking of it automatically reinforces it. There is no outside input of a person, it’s the eyesight that allowed you to see, perceive, and then be reinforced. Example of a cookie fanatic seeing a cookie on Instagram and being automatically reinforced when he saw the post. 3. Explain what producing is and how producing is automatically reinforced. (1 point) As with the defention above, the behavior of producing goes a step further. The person who enages in this behavior must first do an act or enagage in some sort of activity before they are able to perceive and then be automatically reinforced. For example shooting and scoring a 3 pointer, and becoming automatically reinforced. 4. Explain how problem solving could be automatically reinforced and give an example. (1 point)
AB541: Concepts & Principles II Reading Check (5 pts) Unit 4 Student: Problem solving behavior is when a part of your next sequential behavior is changed by the fact that you were able to solve a problem. When the problem is solved, that allows for the change in another behavior, which is then automatically strengthened and reinforced by the solving of the problem. For example using mnemonics to remember the 7 dimensions of ABA for your exam. 5. What is the barrier to clinically studying automatically maintained behavior (i.e. why do some say we cannot discuss automatic behavior?) (0.5 points) The barrier towards clinically studying automatically maintained behavior is the fact that we cannot quantify or empirically observe and conduct experiments on behaviors that are automated by the behavers own system (body). There is an inability to separate the automatic reinforcement from the behavior itself. If we do separate it, it might not fully disclose the distinctions of that behavior. Its like trying to study how fish breathe through their gills but on land. Palmer (1996) 1. What is parity? (0.5 points) When the practice of the speaker’s language matches that of their community, the speaker enages in what is known as parity. It is the automatic reinforcemtn of verbal behavior, which can be reinforcing if it is in line with what the community is practicing or it can be punishing if it is not in line with what the community is practicing. 2. Give an example of parity that has happened in your life or you have seen (not an example from the article). (0.5 points) An example that happened to me was learning how to speak french at the age of 7 with friends in a French speaking country. I used to translate the sentences word for word first such as saying “ Can I play with you guys”. I translkated each word for itself and said Es que je joue avec toi garcons. I then learnt the correct way to say it would be to frame the question as a phrase. Je peux joué avec vous?
